Surbiton High School

"Be good sweet maid and let who will be clever" ran the motto when Surbiton High opened its doors in 1884 with eleven girls. More than a century on, the girls here are very clever indeed: GCSE and A-level results sit among the highest-performing in England, and roughly nine in ten sixth-formers move on to Russell Group or top-ten universities. This is a selective Christian day school in Kingston upon Thames, part of the United Learning family, built on a diamond model: co-educational preparatory schools for boys and girls from age 4, then a girls-only Senior School and Sixth Form from 11 to 18. Around 1,618 pupils are spread across eight sites clustered in Surbiton, led since January 2025 by Principal Matthew Shoults, an Oxford graduate with a Cambridge PGCE. The February 2026 inspection found every standard met, describing a community that is ambitious, caring and proud of itself. There is no boarding; this is a day school throughout.

Surbiton High is a girls' school with a co-educational front door. Boys and girls start together in the two preparatory schools, the Boys' Prep housed in Charles Burney House and the Girls' Prep on Surbiton Road, before boys move on at 11 and girls continue into the Senior School and Sixth Form. That structure, single-sex from 11 upwards, is a deliberate philosophy rather than an accident of history, and it shapes the tone: leadership, ambition and voice are expected of the girls without qualification.

The Christian foundation is genuine but worn lightly. The school was created in 1884 by Archdeacon Charles Burney as a founding member of the Church Schools Company, with the aim of giving girls access to a superior education along the guiding principles of the Church of England. Its first head, Miss Mary Amelia Bennett, was one of the first women to graduate from Girton College, Cambridge. That lineage of pioneering women still runs through daily life: the six senior houses are named for Austen, Curie, Franklin, Nightingale, Pankhurst and Parks, and the school's charitable partnerships lean towards girls' education abroad, including the period-poverty charity Kujuwa in Kenya.

The school has grown by accretion into its present shape. Boys arrived through the merger with Arundel House Boys' School in 1987, Mary Bennett House was acquired in 2014, and the extended Charles Burney House opened as the Boys' Prep in 2017, opened by the tennis player Tim Henman OBE. Today the institution sits within United Learning, the successor to the Church Schools Company that Surbiton helped found in 1884, which gives it the backing of one of the larger education groups in England without diluting its distinct identity.

The atmosphere inspectors describe is warm and busy rather than pressured. Pupils are ambitious and deeply proud to belong to a diverse and caring community, and behaviour is extremely good, with serious misbehaviour rare and bullying seldom occurring. The values the school names for itself, courage and an inquisitive nature alongside respect and compassion, are visible in the sheer volume of what pupils do beyond lessons.

Surbiton is an academic school first, and the numbers bear that out. These are proprietary FindMySchool rankings built from official results data, and they place the senior school in elite company.

At GCSE, more than three-quarters of all grades awarded were the very top 9 or 8 (equivalent to the old A*), and 92% were grades 7 to 9 (A or better). That performance ranks the school 71st of 3,895 in England for GCSE results, placing it in the top 1.8%, among the highest-performing in England (ranked against all schools in England with published GCSE results, state and independent). On the blended overall measure, which combines results with the FindMySchool inspection score, Surbiton sits 58th of 3,887, and it is the 2nd strongest school in Kingston upon Thames.

The Sixth Form is stronger still. At A-level, 36% of entries were graded A* and 69% reached A* or A, against an England average of roughly 24% at that level; 92% of grades were A* to B, comfortably double the England figure of around 47%. That puts the Sixth Form 55th of 2,562 in England for A-level results, the top 2.1% and again among the highest-performing in England (ranked against all schools in England with published A-level results, state and independent). The overall position is 49th of 2,561, and once more 2nd in Kingston upon Thames. Senior pupils achieve highly in public examinations, typically doing better than their standardised baseline tests would predict, evidence that the school adds value rather than simply admitting able girls and standing back.

Breadth matters alongside those grades. The Sixth Form offers 37 A-level subjects grouped into arts, social sciences, languages and sciences, and the list runs well past the standard menu: girls can take Classical Greek and Latin, Art History, Classical Civilisation, Philosophy, Further Mathematics, Computer Science and Fashion and Textiles alongside the mainstream sciences and humanities. That range lets specialists build unusual combinations, whether aiming at medicine, at classics, or at art and design.

Because the preparatory schools are independent, they sit outside the Key Stage 2 league tables, so there is no primary ranking to report. The early years and prep provision is a clear strength in its own right: the early years setting is well led, staff match activities carefully to children's needs, and pupils across the prep and senior schools make good progress.

Teaching is rigorous and quick-moving, built around an effective assessment system that flags both pupils racing ahead and those who need a hand. The school screens every senior girl on entry, with diagnostic checks in Years 7, 8, 9 and 12, so intervention is targeted rather than generic. That machinery is what lets the school claim, credibly, that girls exceed their standardised baselines.

The one candid note is a single recommended next step: teaching in the senior school should more consistently enable pupils to think for themselves as effectively as possible. It is a single, narrow next step rather than a systemic concern, and it sits alongside praise for a comprehensive personal, social, health and economic education programme through which pupils learn to respect one another and value difference. For families, the takeaway is a school whose academic engine is powerful and well-tuned, with a live ambition to push independent thinking a notch further.

Learning support is a genuine strength rather than an afterthought. The department monitors pupils from entry and runs one-to-one and small-group work on organisation, revision strategy, study skills, handwriting and typing. With 293 pupils identified as having special educational needs and 17 holding education, health and care plans, and 212 girls learning English as an additional language, the school also offers structured English as a Foreign Language teaching, preparing students for Cambridge English and IELTS qualifications where needed.

There are three moments of transition to understand here. At the end of Year 6, girls in the Girls' Prep progress into the Senior School, while boys leave the Boys' Prep at 11 and move on to other senior schools, so families of boys should plan for that step from the outset. At 16, the school's own Year 11 girls continue into the Sixth Form provided they meet the academic entry requirements, and the Sixth Form also recruits able external candidates each year.

The destination that matters most to most parents is university, and Surbiton's record is strong. The school reports that approximately 90% of Sixth Form leavers go on to top-ten or Russell Group universities. Named recent destinations span Durham, Imperial College London, King's College London, the London School of Economics, Bath, Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, Warwick and Manchester, with a steady flow into competitive medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. Oxbridge is a realistic target rather than a rarity: in a recent year, 33 applications to Oxford and Cambridge produced 7 offers and 6 places. A handful of girls each year follow more specialist routes, including performing-arts conservatoires and athletic scholarships to universities in the United States, a reminder that the school's sport and arts are strong enough to open doors of their own. The 2025 leavers, for instance, included students heading into medicine, dentistry and veterinary science as well as Oxbridge, so the sciences and the humanities both convert into competitive places.

Careers support underpins all of this. Careers education is extensive, with visiting speakers and work-experience opportunities, so choices are informed rather than left to chance.

Surbiton is academically selective, and competition is real. The main entry point is 11+ into Year 7, by entrance examination in English and Mathematics; the English paper combines an online comprehension with handwritten creative writing, and the Mathematics assessment sits at Key Stage 2 level. The exam for September 2027 entry falls on Saturday 21 November 2026, with around 550 candidates typically sitting for the year group's places. Registration costs £200 for UK applicants, and general applications for that round close on 2 November 2026, with scholarship and bursary applications due earlier, by 7 October 2026. Offers are communicated by early February 2027 following interviews in December and January.

A smaller 13+ route into Year 9 runs the same examination weekend, but with only 24 places available annually it is highly competitive. Reception entry into the two preparatory schools and Sixth Form entry at 16 complete the picture. Sixth Form places are offered to internal girls who meet the required grades and to external applicants sitting the school's process.

The Christian foundation does not gate admission: entry is by academic assessment, not by faith practice, and the school welcomes families of all backgrounds. Because Surbiton is a fee-paying school without a geographic catchment, there is no last-distance-offered figure to quote; proximity does not confer priority here, though the extensive coach network (below) widens the practical catchment considerably. Pastoral care is a point of pride, and it is externally validated: the school holds the Wellbeing Award for Schools from Optimus Education. Every inspection standard relating to pupils' physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing is met, and pupils are confident to speak to adults about their concerns, a telling indicator in any school.

Behaviour is calm and kind. Pupils behave extremely well, and the school acts swiftly and effectively on the rare occasions problems arise. There is a strong culture of service: girls raise money for charity, support one another, and develop self-awareness through causes including the Cold Feet Foundation's library project at Shree Mahadev Secondary School and the Kujuwa girls'-education charity. Safeguarding was judged strong at the February 2026 inspection, with well-trained staff, close links with external partners and timely referral of concerns. That the school retains an externally accredited wellbeing standard while carrying a busy academic and co-curricular load says something about how deliberately pastoral structures are built rather than assumed.

Co-curricular life at Surbiton is unusually rich, with more than 140 activities on offer, and three pillars stand out.

Sport is the most conspicuous. The school runs eight flagship sports, its Super Eight of cricket, football, netball, hockey, gymnastics, rowing, tennis and skiing, in which pupils achieve borough, regional and national success. The estate backs the ambition: the 36-acre Hinchley Wood Sports Ground carries an Olympic-standard hockey pitch, cricket astro strips and tennis courts, Oaken Lane adds further courts and an astro hockey pitch, and rowing is based at The Boat House in Teddington, refurbished in 2024. Elite performers are supported through Surbiton Advanced Sport, a mentorship programme offering guidance on balancing training and academics, nutrition, injury prevention and contact with professional athletes, and a partnership with the London Pulse Netball Super League franchise was announced in 2025. Crucially, the programme is inclusive as well as elite, letting national-level athletes flourish while still giving everyone else competitive fixtures or a way to keep fit.

Music and the performing arts run almost as deep. A large music department, with more than 30 staff delivering something like 400 lessons a week, fields choirs, orchestras, a wind band and percussion ensembles and stages a busy calendar of concerts. Drama and dance are prolific: a minimum of twelve productions a year, from intimate studio pieces to large-scale shows, plus the annual dance showcase Evolve. The set-piece is the whole-school musical at the New Wimbledon Theatre, one of London's largest auditoriums, where more than 160 students perform to audiences of over 3,000. An annual fashion and arts showcase each March involves more than 800 pupils and raises over £15,000 for charity.

Beyond sport and stage, the club list is genuinely varied, running from Chess, Art and Debating to Friendship Hour and an Amnesty International group, so girls who are neither athletes nor performers still find their corner. The six-house system channels much of the charity, sport and creative competition, giving the school its internal rhythm. Even the prep buildings pull their weight here: the extended Charles Burney House provides science and art rooms, a music and drama room and a library, so the co-curricular habit starts young.

Fees are billed per term and now include VAT. For 2026-27, Senior School fees (Years 7 to 13) are £9,276.84 per term, which works out at roughly £27,800 a year as an estimate. In the preparatory schools, termly fees run from £5,879.72 in Reception to £6,200 in Years 1 and 2 and £7,557.62 in Years 3 to 6. Lunch is charged separately in the younger years.

Financial support exists but is targeted. Means-tested Church Schools Foundation Bursaries are offered at Year 7 and Sixth Form entry only, reviewed annually; the school does not award full bursaries, so families are expected to contribute. A sibling discount reduces fees by 5% for a second child and 10% for a third and beyond. Merit scholarships are more numerous: at both Year 7 and Sixth Form entry the school awards academic, art, drama, dance, performing arts, music and sport scholarships across its flagship disciplines, and a Dame Angela Rumbold Science Scholarship recognises continuing students pursuing two sciences. Scholarships confer recognition and modest fee reductions rather than free places, so bursary support remains the route for families who need substantial help.

Surbiton High operates across eight sites in close proximity within Surbiton, roughly an eight-minute walk from Surbiton station, with the Surbiton Assembly Rooms on Maple Road providing dining and performance space and sports grounds a short journey out. The school is a day school and does not offer boarding.

Travel is well served for a school without a catchment: a fleet of ten coach routes, operated by Royale European, reaches across south-west London and into Surrey, from Merton Park, Wimbledon, Barnes, East Sheen, Richmond and Southfields to Hampton Hill, Twickenham, Walton and the Esher and Cobham corridor. That network is a large part of how Surbiton draws a wide intake despite its town-centre footprint, and it removes much of the distance objection for families further out along those corridors. Families should confirm current coach stops, timings and the school day directly with the school.

Boys leave at 11. The co-educational preparatory schools are a stepping stone, not a through-route for boys, who move to other senior schools at the end of Year 6. Families choosing the Boys' Prep should plan the 11+ transfer to a separate school from the start.

Entry is competitive. With around 550 candidates for 11+ places and only 24 places at 13+, admission is the real hurdle; the education itself is exceptional, but securing a place is not guaranteed for even a strong applicant.

Cost, and the shape of financial aid. Senior fees exceed £9,200 a term including VAT, and support is partial: bursaries are means-tested, offered only at two entry points, and never cover fees in full. Scholarships bring recognition more than significant discounts.

Single-sex from 11, and a Christian foundation. The Senior School and Sixth Form are girls-only, which suits many families and not others. The Church of England character is real but inclusive, expressed through values and service rather than required worship; entry does not depend on faith.

Surbiton High is a high-performing London day school that manages to be academically formidable and genuinely broad at the same time. GCSE and A-level results sit among the highest-performing in England, roughly nine in ten leavers reach Russell Group or top-ten universities, and the co-curricular life, led by national-level sport and a prolific performing-arts programme, is deep enough that few girls will find themselves without a stage. The February 2026 inspection confirmed a caring, well-run and safe community, with only a modest nudge towards even more independent thinking in senior lessons.

It is best suited to academically able girls whose families want a rigorous, all-round education with outstanding sport and arts, and who can navigate a selective, oversubscribed entry and substantial fees. Families of boys should treat the Boys' Prep as a strong start with a planned move at 11, and anyone seeking boarding or co-education beyond primary should look elsewhere. For the right family, the education is exceptional and the main challenge is getting in.
