Question 4

When are primary school offers released in Bath and North East Somerset for 2027?

Accepted Answer

Reception class offers for children starting primary school in September 2027 are released across England on Friday 16 April 2027. Families who apply by the 15 January 2027 deadline will receive their offer on this date, usually by email through their home local authority's admissions portal. If you don't get your first-choice school, you have a legal right to appeal: our step-by-step post-offer-day guide walks through accepting the place, joining the waiting list, and lodging an appeal, and our primary school waiting lists guide explains how the lists actually work.

Question 5

What if my child didn't get their first-choice primary school in Bath and North East Somerset?

Accepted Answer

First, accept the place you have been offered, this does not prevent you from pursuing alternatives. Then consider three parallel routes: join the waiting list for your preferred school, submit a formal appeal within 20 school days of the decision letter, or apply in-year to other schools with available places. Our post-offer-day guide covers each of these routes in detail, and our primary school waiting lists guide explains how positions are ranked and how to maximise your chances.

Question 6

When is primary school offer day in England?

Accepted Answer

National primary school offer day in England falls on 16 April each year. This is the day local authorities send out reception class offers for children starting primary school the following September. If 16 April falls on a weekend or bank holiday, offers are usually released on the next working day. Parents who applied before the 15 January deadline will receive their offer on this date, by email if they applied online, or by post otherwise. If you don't get your first-choice school, our step-by-step guide on what to do after primary school offer day walks you through accepting the place, joining the waiting list, and lodging an appeal, and our primary school waiting lists guide explains how the lists actually work.

Question 7

How do primary school appeals work?

Accepted Answer

If your child is not offered a place at one of your preferred primary schools, you have a legal right to appeal. Appeals are heard by an independent admission appeal panel, separate from the school and the local authority. You must usually lodge your appeal within 20 school days of receiving the refusal letter. The panel considers whether the admission arrangements were lawfully followed and whether the case for admitting another child outweighs the prejudice to the school. Decisions are binding, the process is free, and families can represent themselves or bring a friend. Our post-offer-day guide covers the appeals process in detail alongside the alternative of joining a primary school waiting list.

Question 8

What is the primary school application deadline for Bath and North East Somerset?

Accepted Answer

The national primary school application deadline in England is 15 January. Applications submitted after this date are treated as late and are only considered once on-time applications have been processed, which usually means a much lower chance of securing a preferred school. Apply through your home local authority, not the school directly, even if the school you want is in another council area. If you missed the deadline or didn't get your first choice, our post-offer-day guide walks through your options, and our primary school waiting lists guide explains how to maximise your position once on a list.

Question 9

How do primary school catchment areas work?

Accepted Answer

Primary school catchment areas are geographic zones that local authorities or schools use as one of the criteria for deciding who gets a place when the school is oversubscribed. Most state primary schools prioritise children in care first, then siblings of existing pupils, then children living closest to the school, typically measured as a straight-line distance from the family home to the main school gate. Catchments are not legal boundaries, and living inside one does not guarantee a place. Faith schools, academies, and free schools may apply additional or different criteria, and the distance that secured a place one year can change the next depending on applicant numbers.
