The FMS Inspection Score is FindMySchool's own 1–10 measure. It is a separate metric from the official Ofsted judgements shown below. See how we calculate it.

Ofsted judgements by area

Ofsted grades each area of a school's work on its own four-point scale (Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, Inadequate). Since September 2024 a graded inspection no longer ends in a single overall word, so these area judgements, not an overall grade, are how state schools are reported.

Area of judgementOutstandingGoodRequires ImprovementInadequate
Quality of Education2,61017,4011,607179
Behaviour & Attitudes4,91516,058701123
Personal Development4,91116,30150755
Leadership & Management3,25717,1181,203219

Counts cover graded state-school inspections in England. An official Ofsted judgement and an FMS band are not interchangeable: our band is a 1–10 score derived from the detail of the inspection report, so an Outstanding area is not automatically FMS Elite.

Ofsted report cards and the new framework (2025)

In 2024 Ofsted scrapped the single overall grade. From autumn 2025, schools that are re-inspected receive a report cardinstead. Rather than one word for the whole school, each area of a school's work is graded on a five-point scale:

  • Exceptional
  • Strong standard
  • Expected standard
  • Needs attention
  • Urgent improvement

Safeguarding is reported separately as met or not met, rather than folded into an overall judgement. The aim is to give parents a fuller, more honest picture than a single label could.

Importantly, the older single-word grades (Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, Inadequate) remain valid and visible until a school is actually re-inspected under the new framework. Most schools on this site still carry a legacy grade, and we show it as exactly that, never as a current report card.

What Ofsted grades and ratings mean

Under the legacy framework, a graded inspection judged four areas, each on the Outstanding–Good–Requires Improvement–Inadequate scale:

  • Quality of education: the curriculum, teaching and how well pupils learn and achieve.
  • Behaviour and attitudes: conduct, attendance and the school's culture.
  • Personal development: how the school builds character, resilience and wider opportunities.
  • Leadership and management: how well leaders and governors run the school.

Requires Improvement means a school is not yet good and will usually be re-inspected sooner. Inadequatecovers schools with serious weaknesses or those placed in special measures. When you read a report, look beyond the headline at the inspection date, the direction of travel, and what inspectors actually wrote about your child's phase or needs.

Ofsted rating vs our FMS Inspection Score

Official Ofsted rating

The judgement Ofsted published directly for a state school. We always label it as the official rating and link to the real report on Ofsted's website so you can read it in full.

FMS Inspection Score

FindMySchool's own 1–10 measure, derived from the content of official Ofsted inspection reports and grouped into five bands. It puts every state school on one consistent scale. It is an independent analysis, not endorsed by Ofsted. How we calculate it.

Both are shown at equal billing on every school profile. As Ofsted's report cards roll out per re-inspection, the FMS score gives you a stable point of comparison across schools inspected under different frameworks.

Ofsted reports: frequently asked questions

What is Ofsted?
Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It is the official body that inspects and regulates state schools, many early years providers and children’s services in England, reporting on the quality of education and the safety of pupils.
What do Ofsted grades mean?
Until 2024, every graded inspection ended in one of four single-word judgements: Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate, alongside judgements on quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. These legacy grades remain valid and visible until a school is re-inspected.
What is an Ofsted report card?
From autumn 2025, re-inspected schools receive a report card instead of a single overall word. Each area of a school’s work is graded on a five-point scale (exceptional, strong standard, expected standard, needs attention, or urgent improvement), and safeguarding is judged as met or not met. A school keeps its older single-word grade until it is re-inspected under the new framework.
Where can I read the official Ofsted report?
Every school profile on FindMySchool links straight to the official report on Ofsted’s website, and the curated list on this page links to a selection of recent reports directly. You can also search by name on the official Ofsted reports site or on GOV.UK.
Do private schools get Ofsted inspected?
Most independent schools in England are inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) rather than Ofsted, although some are inspected by Ofsted. FindMySchool covers both, and gives every school an FMS Inspection Score so you can compare state and independent schools on a single scale.
How often are schools inspected?
Most state schools are inspected roughly every four years, though schools judged Requires Improvement or Inadequate are usually re-inspected more often. Newly opened schools are typically inspected within their first few years. Inspection cycles are kept under review by Ofsted and the Department for Education.
What is Ofsted Parent View?
Parent View is Ofsted’s online survey where parents can share their opinion of a school at any time of year. Inspectors look at Parent View responses when they inspect, so it is one way parents feed into the inspection process.
