Beside Elstree Reservoir, where Hertfordshire countryside gives way to the built edges of south-west Hertsmere, Borehamwood grew from a scattering of farms into a commuter town of around 36,000 during the twentieth century. Elstree & Borehamwood station connects the town to St Pancras International via Thameslink in under twenty-five minutes. The studios are its signature. Elstree, long home to the internationally recognised film and television complex known as Elstree Studios, is also among the most sought-after addresses for primary school catchments in the district. Cowley Hill and the Borehamwood residential belt form the remainder of the town's compact footprint.
