A linear high street follows the historic Portsmouth Road through Esher, a low-rise Surrey town set between Sandown Park Racecourse and the National Trust's Claremont Landscape Garden at its southern fringe. Hinchley Wood and Claygate are among the most sought-after pockets in Elmbridge for school catchments, and Esher itself is a school-competitive postcode where families plan moves around primary and secondary places. Esher Commons forms the southern boundary, marking the edge of the Greater London Built-Up Area where open land begins. South West Main Line trains from Esher station reach London Waterloo in around twenty-five minutes. Claremont Landscape Garden once belonged to Princess Charlotte and Leopold I of Belgium before Queen Victoria commissioned a fountain and Diamond Jubilee column for the town. Around 51,000 residents were recorded here at the 2011 census.
