On the south bank of the River Stort in west Essex, Harlow was transformed from a small market settlement into one of England's post-war new towns when it received its designation in 1947. The town was planned around a series of residential neighbourhoods separated by green wedges, with Little Parndon and Burnt Mill among the most school-competitive corners for families seeking primary places. Hare Street, closer to the original settlement, draws parents targeting catchments at the quieter eastern fringe. Mark Hall and Potter Street extend the residential range northward, while Harlow Town station connects the town to Liverpool Street via the West Anglia Main Line in around thirty minutes. Around 93,000 people live across the district today.
