Between Regent's Park and the north bank of the Thames, Westminster is the only London borough to hold city status, a distinction formalised in 1540. The borough grew from a Saxon royal settlement around Westminster Abbey into the seat of national government, enclosing Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and Trafalgar Square within a few dense central square miles. Around 204,000 people live in the borough today.

Marylebone, Westminster, and Covent Garden together form a school-competitive arc through the centre, drawing families who compete keenly for primary places across a mix of state and independent provision. Maida Vale and Victoria extend the residential offer north and south of the core. The Jubilee and Bakerloo lines thread through the borough, with Baker Street, Oxford Circus, and Victoria among the busiest Underground interchanges.
