Former colliery terraces and 19th-century brick streetscapes line the River Don where it converges with the River Dearne in Mexborough, a mid-size South Yorkshire town of around 15,000 in the City of Doncaster District. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Mexborough and the adjoining settlement of Swinton to the southwest together form the school-competitive heart of this stretch of the Don Valley, with families across both communities competing for primary places. Rail services from Mexborough station reach Sheffield in around half an hour, maintaining good connections to South Yorkshire's main employment centres.
