Sensory play, outdoor exploration and familiar songs give Rose Lane’s nursery its character: children learn through things they can do, handle and join in with. This is the nursery within Rose Lane Primary School on Rose Lane in Chadwell Heath, Romford. Families can choose a morning, afternoon or full-day pattern, making the length of the nursery day a practical part of the choice.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Requires improvement at its inspection on 23 and 24 January 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Games and practical activities feature in the nursery curriculum, with learning adapted to children’s individual needs. Sensory experiences sit alongside outdoor activities. For a young child, that means learning involves participation and exploration, rather than simply listening to an adult.
Language is a concrete strength within the early years picture. In January 2024, staff supported children’s language development effectively through stories, singing and rhymes that children recognised and joined in with. Familiar material gives children a way to participate in shared language activities. The January 2024 report’s reading discussion also identified insufficient staff knowledge for teaching phonics and inaccurate modelling of strategies for reading unfamiliar words. Inspectors required training and support for staff to teach the agreed phonics curriculum consistently and precisely. These were findings about reading across the school, rather than a claim that nursery children specifically fell behind. Early years provision was graded Requires improvement.
A half-day session lasts from the morning start to late morning, or from lunchtime into the afternoon. The full-day option spans both parts of the day, giving families a different attendance pattern from the shorter sessions.
Toileting receives practical attention on the nursery information page. Resources include ERIC guidance on daytime bladder difficulties, nighttime wetting and starting school, alongside advice for parents of autistic children. These give families material to use at home while their child develops toileting skills.
For additional needs, the school’s parent resources include Speech Link and early years visual timetable pictures. The SEND information page also directs families to speech and language guidance and NHS videos. These are resources for parents, rather than a promise of a particular intervention for every nursery child.
The school office provides a contact route to the special educational needs coordinator. Safeguarding concerns can be sent directly to safeguarding@roselaneprimary.org.uk, giving parents a specific route for raising a concern about a child.
Attending Rose Lane’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline.
Barking and Dagenham’s admissions team is the route given on the school’s admissions page, which links families to the council’s school admissions service. Keep that application separate from the nursery Interest Form: registering for nursery is one process, applying for Reception is another. Nursery attendance should therefore be chosen for the nursery experience itself, with the later school application treated as a separate decision.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Both carry a 15-hour label. The full-day pattern runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm and carries a 30-hour label. These are the school’s session labels, so the full-day clock span should not be treated as a separate calculation of funded hours.
To register interest or apply, complete a Nursery Interest Form at the school’s main office. Nursery tours are also offered. General enquiries can go to office@roselaneprimary.org.uk or 020 8270 4438, using option 0 for the office.
The nursery information page links to Childcare Choices guidance about applying for 30 hours of free childcare. That provides an application resource; it does not make the full-day option an automatic funding entitlement for every family.
Morning sessions are 8.30am to 11.30am, afternoons are 12.30pm to 3.30pm, and full days are 8.30am to 3.30pm.
