A nursery block, space for 52 children and a Catholic school setting give St Bede's nursery its character. On Canon Avenue in Chadwell Heath, this is the school's own provision; its history page describes accommodation for 52 nursery children, rather than a current attendance figure. Catholic faith shapes the wider setting, with Gospel teaching and time for prayer forming part of school life.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Early literacy gives the early years curriculum a clear direction. In September 2024, children were developing their knowledge of letter sounds, practising letter formation and learning to write numbers accurately. A structured reading programme helped them build fluency. These are concrete foundations: recognising a sound, shaping a letter and becoming more confident with written language.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also includes children's social skills and emotional development. In September 2024, these featured alongside expectations for behaviour and everyday routines. Learning how to manage feelings and take part in the group therefore sits alongside the work on literacy.
Curriculum planning. The September 2024 inspection identified a weakness in how learning across early years was organised. Intended learning was insufficiently clear across the different areas, and the steps towards agreed outcomes needed further definition. For families, the concern is consistency: children's experiences need to build towards clear goals while still responding to individual needs. The required improvement was to specify those goals and the learning sequence more precisely.
Nursery teaching roles sit within the EYFS team, alongside a nursery higher level teaching assistant. The wider school also has a SENDCO and Inclusion Leader. This gives families identifiable roles for discussing teaching and additional needs, without treating the staffing list as a promise of individual support hours.
In September 2024, early years children who found reading difficult received skilled staff help to catch up. Support was connected to the learning itself.
For questions about learning or wellbeing, parents can use the class teacher contact form. General messages, including absence, appointments and changes to collection, go to the administration email. Keeping these routes distinct helps a parent direct a concern to the relevant team.
Attending St Bede's nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception classes. Nursery and Reception admissions are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception application route by the normal deadline. Treat that application as a separate task when planning your child's next step.
Nursery provision was part time in September 2024. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 020 8590 1376 or email admin.stbedes@redbridge.gov.uk. The address is Canon Avenue, Chadwell Heath, RM6 5RR.
Clothing instructions include practical preparation for wet clothes: nursery families should keep spare bottoms, socks and underwear in their child's PE bag at school. Nursery children should wear trainers with Velcro fastenings, and the school asks pupils to wear PE kit on their PE day. These are useful details when preparing a child's bag and clothing.
No. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal route by the normal deadline.
The school's early years provision was graded Good at the inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024. This was a school inspection, not a separate nursery judgement.
Early years curriculum planning needed clearer learning goals and a more precise sequence towards them, so children's experiences would build consistently.
