The market square and Georgian roofline that give Ross-on-Wye its recognisable skyline rise above a bend in the River Wye, with Herefordshire farmland stretching westward toward the Welsh border and the Forest of Dean beginning to the south.

A compact market town of around 11,000 people, Ross-on-Wye has long been a school-competitive choice for families settling in southern Herefordshire, and Walford is among the most sought-after villages for primary catchments. Goodrich and Ashfield Park extend the residential spread. Hereford, the county town and nearest rail hub, lies some fourteen miles to the northwest, with Great Western Railway services reaching Cardiff in around an hour.
