Built to ship coal from County Durham's inland pits, Seaham Harbour was developed in the 1820s under the direction of the Marquess of Londonderry, transforming a modest cliff-top village into one of the north-east's principal coal-exporting ports. Around 20,000 people live in the town today.
The residential districts of Westlea and Deneside spread westward from the sea cliffs, with Seaham itself serving as the established catchment focus for families choosing schools along this stretch of the Durham Heritage Coast. Regular bus services connect the town to Sunderland to the north, where Northern Rail trains reach Newcastle in around twenty minutes and the wider north-east rail network.
