Granted a strategic crossing of the River Medway by Norman lords in the eleventh century, Tonbridge developed around its motte-and-bailey castle into a market town set across the Medway valley in west Kent. Around 41,000 people live across the borough today.

Tonbridge town centre is widely regarded as one of the most competitive pockets in the borough for school catchments, while Hildenborough, the village to the north, draws families targeting primary places in quieter surroundings. Tonbridge station connects to London Bridge by Southeastern trains in around fifty minutes, with Paddock Wood and Higham Wood extending the residential offer eastward.
