Whole days outdoors give Three Little Birds Forest Nursery its character. In January 2026, children spent their days in nature, choosing between play, exploration and rest while adults developed learning from their interests. That makes the outdoor setting central to the experience, rather than an occasional change of scene.
At its January 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged inclusion and leadership and governance Exceptional, the other evaluated areas Strong standard, and safeguarding standards met. The nursery has 21 places in total; children attending in January 2026 were aged 1 to 4.
In January 2026, the curriculum followed the early years foundation stage: the framework for children's learning, development and care, translated here into play, conversation and exploration. Children could pursue an interest while practitioners introduced vocabulary, questions and mathematical ideas.
That month, an interest in spray bottles and mixing colours led to art activities inspired by Jackson Pollock. Adults encouraged children to predict what would happen and discuss direction, height and comparisons. An everyday interest therefore became an opportunity to explore language and mathematics through physical activity.
Communication took several forms in January 2026. Alongside speech, staff used Makaton, signs and gestures to support communication, together with visual aids. Children had ways to express themselves beyond spoken words. Observations also informed adjustments to activities and the next steps in learning.
At the January 2026 inspection, Ofsted found highly effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, strong progress in communication, and key persons who understood children's individual cues exceptionally well. Support included working with families and outside professionals on referrals, education, health and care plans, and transitions for children with complex needs.
In January 2026, sleep and feeding arrangements followed children's individual needs. Adults encouraged children to recognise bodily cues and express what they needed. This gave care routines room to accommodate different rhythms.
Emotional regulation was practised during calm moments that month, so children could use familiar strategies when feelings became harder to manage. Staff also worked with parents to connect learning at home and nursery, while preparation for the next setting included routines, relationships and independence.
