Woodchurch Windmills & Fun Club

At a Glance

In March 2023, a mobile classroom, an outdoor chalkboard and regular Reception visits gave Woodchurch Windmills & Fun Club its recognisable preschool character. In March 2023, these combined imaginative play with opportunities to become familiar with school life. The setting has capacity for 20 children.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its inspection on 30 March 2023. Children attending then were aged two to four; songs, practical independence and outdoor movement featured in their day.

The Nursery Experience

In March 2023, the home corner and builder's area supported sustained imaginative play. Children collaborated on a train made from blocks, discussing what to add. Carpet sessions brought together rhymes, actions and signing, while stories prompted questions about other people's experiences.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, care and development: here, its inspection-time examples included learning through play, conversation and practical tasks. Children chose plates and cutlery and prepared food at snack time, giving them opportunities to practise doing things for themselves.

Outside, March 2023 activities included bicycle riding, swinging and climbing. A large chalkboard brought drawing and early writing into outdoor play. Staff also used dominoes to practise turn-taking, making a familiar game serve a clear learning purpose.

Care and Support

At its March 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, staff attentive to children needing speech and language help, and communication with parents effective. Staff sought specialist input for language needs and adjusted their speech to help children understand and practise words.

In March 2023, children had warm relationships with their key person, and shared meals provided time for conversation. Parents received updates through discussions and an online learning journal. Staff meetings considered children's learning and next steps, connecting planning with what children needed to practise.

Regular visits to Reception were also taking place in March 2023. Becoming familiar with the classroom and teachers offered practical preparation for the change to school.

Practical Information

The address is Woodchurch C of E Primary School, Woodchurch, Ashford, Kent TN26 3QJ. In March 2023, the preschool occupied a mobile classroom within the primary-school grounds.

At that time, opening hours were 8.30am to 3pm on weekdays, during term time. The setting also received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. These are March 2023 arrangements rather than a current attendance offer.

Attendance at a nursery on school grounds does not guarantee a Reception place. Families still apply through the local authority admissions process.

Things to Consider

  • Mathematics in everyday play. In March 2023, a dedicated mathematics area was in use, but staff sometimes missed opportunities to develop mathematical ideas elsewhere. Ask how counting and other mathematical thinking now feature across activities.
  • Children's backgrounds. March 2023 activities explored cultures and languages, but did not consistently reflect the backgrounds of children attending. Ask how family experiences shape stories and activities now.
  • Term-time planning. The March 2023 opening pattern followed school terms and ended at 3pm. When visiting, ask which current attendance arrangements would fit your family's week.

The Verdict

For families considering a preschool with outdoor movement, imaginative play and preparation for school, the March 2023 picture has clear appeal. Key-person relationships and practical independence added substance to the day. Its recorded term-time timetable suited a school-day routine; mathematics and the representation of children's backgrounds were the areas needing further attention.
