Puddleducks Kindercare

At a Glance

Caterpillars becoming butterflies, bugs beneath logs and songs outdoors give Puddleducks Kindercare's April 2025 daily life a recognisable character. Children explored seasonal change through things they could observe and discuss. Practical discovery carried much of the learning.

At its 14 April 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall and across all four assessed areas. Based in Wherstead, Ipswich, the nursery has capacity for 53 children aged 6 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, its April 2025 expression included conversation, physical play and early mathematics woven into activities.

In April 2025, children watched caterpillars develop and explained how they would become butterflies. Older children shifted logs to investigate insects, discussed what they had discovered and assembled shelters from natural materials. These activities gave children something concrete to investigate together.

Outdoor learning extended beyond the nursery. During April 2025, refurbishment of the large garden was accompanied by daily outings for all children to nearby woods or a pond. Babies and toddlers fed waterbirds and practised moving over uneven ground; older children combined exploration with collaborative play. Number songs and conversations about shapes, quantities and size brought mathematics into these experiences.

Creative freedom was less consistent. In April 2025, children mixed materials for dough and potions, but adults directed some artwork too closely. The improvement priorities were more scope for imagination and creativity, alongside further staff training to deepen learning.

Care and Support

At the April 2025 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described attentive interactions and trusting relationships between children, their key person and other staff. Those relationships were a central strength of the nursery's care at that visit.

In April 2025, practitioners gave children space to explore independently, then stepped in to extend an activity when useful. Conversations allowed children time to contribute, while spontaneous singing engaged babies. Praise recognised effort, and adults modelled calm behaviour.

Everyday routines also encouraged independence. In April 2025, children marked their own attendance and put away their belongings; displaying their artwork helped make the space feel theirs. Staff supervision included discussion of professional development, although some practitioners needed a stronger understanding of how to support imaginative learning, especially for younger children.

Practical Information

The nursery's address is 8a Bourne Terrace, Wherstead, Ipswich, IP2 8NG.

In April 2025, opening hours ran from 8am to 5.30pm on weekdays, with operation throughout the year. At that time, the nursery also provided government-funded early education for eligible children.

Things to Consider

  • Creative independence. In April 2025, some artwork was too adult-directed. More child-led creativity and staff development were improvement priorities, relevant to families who value open-ended exploration.
  • Outdoor arrangements. The large garden was being refurbished in April 2025, with daily outings maintaining outdoor activity. At a visit, what is the current balance between garden play and trips to the woods or pond?

The Verdict

Puddleducks suits families who value practical exploration, outdoor experiences and close relationships with practitioners. Its April 2025 strengths were tangible: children investigated living things, talked through discoveries and practised independence. The counterweight is equally clear: younger children's imaginative learning needed more skilful support, and creative activities needed greater freedom from adult direction.
