Timbers Nursery School

At a Glance

Woodwork, fruit preparation and a borrowing library gave Timbers Nursery School a practical, hands-on character at its July 2025 inspection. At its July 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated it Outstanding, judged safeguarding effective and found that children made rapid progress.

Based at Oakridge Hall for All in Basingstoke, Timbers has capacity for 31 children and accepts children aged 24 to 60 months. Its term-time calendar makes the holiday pattern an important part of the family decision.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing play and learning together with their everyday needs. In July 2025, staff shaped activities around children's interests and used observations to decide what to introduce next.

Practical learning had a clear progression. Children began by hammering golf tees into a watermelon before moving to supervised work with nails and wood. Preparing their own fruit gave them another opportunity to practise precise hand movements. These were activities with a purpose, rather than simply things to keep children occupied.

Language ran through play too. In July 2025, adults used questions, visual cues and vocabulary suited to children's ages, including while children explored construction bricks together. Smaller discussion groups gave staff opportunities to notice who needed further help with language. Garden resources were also chosen around children's interests, using additional funding to develop outdoor learning.

Care and Support

In July 2025, staff helped children manage disagreements, take turns and attempt solutions themselves. Clear boundaries sat alongside attention to children's feelings. Asking children how they might tackle a problem made independence part of the daily routine.

Family communication had practical consequences. In July 2025, parents could borrow puzzles and books to continue activities at home, and their requests for help with toothbrushing led to it becoming part of daily learning. Healthy-eating posters also helped connect nursery activities with conversations at home.

For children learning English alongside another language, parents supplied phonetic versions of familiar words for staff to use in July 2025. Stories prompted discussion of similarities and differences between people. Staff also worked with outside agencies to help families obtain additional support and funding, giving that partnership a practical role beyond routine updates.

Practical Information

Timbers is at Oakridge Hall for All, Forsythia Walk, Oakridge Village, Basingstoke, RG21 5RL. Opening hours are 8.15am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, during term time; it closes for school holidays.

In July 2025, the nursery accepted government-funded childcare places and received additional funding for disadvantaged children. That inspection-time position should be distinguished from an individual family's funding arrangements.

Things to Consider

  • School-holiday cover. Timbers closes during school holidays. Families needing childcare throughout the year will need a separate holiday arrangement.
  • Booking around the opening day. The opening window runs from 8.15am to 3.30pm. At a visit, ask which attendance patterns can be booked within it and how funded hours fit those patterns.
  • Learning carried home. The July 2025 borrowing library and parent-led toothbrushing work made family involvement concrete. This approach suits parents who want to connect nursery learning with everyday routines.

The Verdict

Timbers suits families seeking term-time childcare with practical play and active involvement in learning at home. Its July 2025 examples give the Outstanding judgement substance: purposeful tool use, language woven into activities and parents influencing daily learning. The school-holiday closure is the clearest practical consideration.
