Glowing Star's Day Nursery

At a Glance

Language, independence and learning through play give Glowing Star's Day Nursery its character. Small-group listening, familiar songs and outdoor obstacle games featured in June 2024, giving children different ways to practise communication and join in with others.

At its June 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and safeguarding effective. This Birmingham setting has capacity for 29 children aged 3 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and guided activities help children build skills for their next stage.

In June 2024, children's interests helped shape activities alongside what they needed to learn next. The day combined play chosen by children with activities guided by adults. That balance gave children opportunities to pursue their own interests as well as work on skills staff wanted them to develop. For parents, the useful distinction is between an activity that occupies a child and one chosen to help that child learn something specific.

Singing and stories supported speaking and listening, while small groups gave children opportunities to talk. Children sang familiar songs and listened to favourite stories as they built confidence in speaking. Outdoors, hoops and large bean bags formed an obstacle course, adding movement and shared games to the day. Staff joined children's play, listened to their ideas and continued conversations with them, making adult involvement part of the activity rather than simply overseeing it.

Older children practised doing things for themselves. In June 2024, staff also helped children recognise emotions, manage frustration and take turns. Clear boundaries gave these social expectations a consistent place in the day, while praise recognised effort and attentive listening. These everyday experiences connected preparation for school with participation in nursery life: expressing a need, sharing with a friend and managing a challenge were learning opportunities in their own right.

Care and Support

Relationships gave staff a starting point for care. In June 2024, conversations with parents helped establish children's existing abilities, and key-person relationships helped staff respond to individual needs. Starting with what a child could already do made parents' knowledge relevant to the nursery day, rather than treating every child as beginning at the same point.

Daily messages and newsletters kept families involved, offering a connection between learning at nursery and at home. These served different purposes: everyday updates maintained contact, while newsletters added another way to keep parents informed. Together, they gave families material to carry into conversations and learning beyond nursery.

At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that developmental assessments identified delays and that staff worked with other professionals to support progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those learning English as an additional language.

In June 2024, children practised hygiene and managing their own personal needs. Independence therefore extended beyond choosing play or joining activities to the practical routines of looking after themselves. Parents also received oral-health information, extending those routines beyond nursery. This gave families a concrete health topic to continue at home, alongside the setting's work on children's growing ability to manage everyday tasks.

Practical Information

The address is Community Roots Enterprise, 88 Soho Road, Birmingham, B21 9DP. Children aged 3 to 60 months are accepted.

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closure on bank holidays. In June 2024, funded early education was offered for children aged two, three and four; that is a dated participation statement rather than a promise of a funded place today.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching consistency. In June 2024, less-confident practitioners needed more coaching to make interactions and teaching more consistent. During a visit, ask how that support now works in daily practice, including how leaders observe interactions and help practitioners develop confidence. The relevant question is how support changes the experience children receive from different adults throughout their day.
  • Purposeful guided activities. The June 2024 improvement priorities included helping staff connect adult-led activities more clearly with each child's next learning steps. Look for examples of how activities are adapted to individual children. A song, story or shared game can be enjoyable; families also need to understand what staff want their child to gain from taking part and how that relates to their development.

The Verdict

Glowing Star's suits families seeking care across the year within a weekday opening window. In June 2024, communication, independence and parent contact were prominent in daily life. Small-group listening, outdoor games and practical self-care gave those themes concrete expression, while updates connected families with the nursery day. That combination will interest parents who value language development and everyday independence alongside play. The decision deserves attention to teaching consistency as well as the activities themselves: purposeful adult support matters alongside children's enthusiasm for play.
