Honeybees Day Care

At a Glance

Home languages helped children build their English, while songs, doll play and conversations about feelings gave learning a personal thread. That is the clearest picture of Honeybees Day Care from June 2024. At its 7 June 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and found safeguarding effective.

Honeybees has capacity for 24 children at 460 Green Lane, Small Heath, Birmingham B9 5QJ. The children attending in June 2024 were aged two to eleven; that age range belongs to that visit.

The Nursery Experience

In June 2024, learning combined purposeful play with familiar routines. Children explored letters and numbers through sand play and used writing materials both indoors and outside. Dressing dolls prompted conversations about younger siblings and babies' needs, connecting imaginative play with family life.

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the June 2024 examples included language, early number work, movement and emotional understanding through play. Home languages helped children understand English, making existing language knowledge part of their learning.

Children also explored differences between families through clothing, food and customs. Nature received less consistent attention: opportunities to understand the natural world were an improvement priority. This matters for families wanting outdoor activity to include learning about the world around them.

Care and Support

At the June 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff identified children needing additional help through observation and assessment, made prompt referrals and worked with professionals supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

In June 2024, staff knew their key children’s preferences and adapted activities accordingly. Group conversations encouraged children to explain feelings and consider others. Communication with parents was tailored to individual families, with support for learning at home and preparation for school.

Daily physical opportunities included music and movement sessions and outdoor activity, alongside nutritious meals and snacks. However, newer staff and apprentices did not consistently involve the youngest children in some activities. Staff development was therefore another improvement priority, with a direct bearing on how fully younger children participated.

Practical Information

In June 2024, the nursery operated Monday to Friday during term time, with sessions running from 8.30am to 3pm. Before- and after-school care and a holiday club were also offered; the holiday club operated between 8.30am and 7pm. These are dated attendance arrangements.

Funding for early education for three- and four-year-olds was accepted in June 2024. This establishes participation at that time, rather than eligibility for an individual family.

Things to Consider

  • Nature learning. Broader experiences of the natural world were a June 2024 improvement priority. Ask how this now shapes children's activities.
  • Younger children's participation. In June 2024, new staff and apprentices needed further development to involve the youngest children consistently. Ask how activities are adapted for them.
  • Attendance arrangements. The June 2024 offer combined term-time nursery sessions with school-day care and a holiday club. Which current pattern would fit your child's age and your working week?

The Verdict

Honeybees suits consideration by families interested in language development, personal communication and play linked to children's home lives. The June 2024 attendance model offered term-time places and before- and after-school provision. Its strongest practical questions concern nature learning and consistent participation for younger children.
