Small Talk Nurseries, Handsworth

At a Glance

Further required action in July 2026 concerned safeguarding, risk management and support for children’s development. Small Talk Nurseries, Handsworth has capacity for 60 children aged 2 to 60 months. The later regulatory position deserves more weight in a family’s decision than the older grade.

At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, with effective safeguarding and positive findings about support for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Those judgements describe that visit, rather than settling the questions raised by subsequent action.

The Nursery Experience

In June 2022, babies explored paint with their fingers and brushes in a spacious baby room, while toddlers used several rooms and played with fruit and vegetables they had bought on a shopping outing. Preschool children mixed play dough, practising the hand movements needed for pencil use.

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care: play and everyday experiences help children build skills and understanding. In June 2022, activities followed children’s interests and their next learning steps. Children acted out Goldilocks and the Three Bears, giving storytelling a practical role in language learning. Staff nevertheless needed to improve pronunciation modelling and introduce early letter sounds more consistently.

There was no outdoor area in June 2022. Babies went out in pushchairs and older children visited a park, where looking for insects brought the natural world into their day.

Care and Support

In June 2022, parents could follow observations through an online app and discuss development at face-to-face parents’ evenings. Children also took home plants grown from seeds, connecting nursery activities with family life.

Mealtime organisation needed attention that June: children stopped playing to wash their hands, then waited too long for food. This interrupted learning rather than providing a smooth change of activity.

Following the July 2026 inspection, Ofsted served a welfare requirements notice on 21 July covering leadership oversight, risk assessment, children’s exposure to hazards, attendance monitoring and records, early identification of developmental delay, and targeted SEND support. The deadline was 4 August 2026; the latest published position is that monitoring would continue, with no completion outcome established here.

Practical Information

The address is 85 Grove Lane, Handsworth, Birmingham, B21 9HF. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with bank holidays and a Christmas-to-New-Year week closed.

In June 2022, the nursery received funding for early education for three- and four-year-olds. That dated participation should not be treated as a current funding offer.

Things to Consider

  • Later safety action. The July 2026 notice followed repeated regulatory intervention earlier that year. Before choosing the setting, what official outcome now demonstrates that the required actions have been completed?
  • Outdoor arrangements. June 2022 outdoor experiences depended on outings rather than an on-site outdoor area. Consider how that arrangement fits your child’s daily play needs.
  • Language and routines. Pronunciation modelling and long waits for meals were June 2022 improvement points. These matter to families weighing communication development and the rhythm of the day.

The Verdict

This nursery merits a cautious assessment. Its June 2022 experiences would appeal to families who value practical play, storytelling and contact with parents, but the July 2026 requirements concern fundamental safety and developmental support. A decision to join should rest on the subsequent official compliance outcome, rather than the older Good grade alone.
