The Little Ripley Day Nursery Wood End Road

At a Glance

A dedicated computer and library room gives Wood End Road a clear identity: books and indoor exploration sit alongside a large outdoor area equipped for movement and play. The Little Ripley Day Nursery Wood End Road, at 134 Wood End Road in Erdington, Birmingham, has 66 places in total and caters for children aged 1 to 60 months. Its room structure stretches from babies to preschool children, with Little Learners and a Library among the named spaces.

Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding at its 28 July 2022 inspection. That judgement belongs to that date. The detail behind it is useful: children practised everyday independence, staff developed learning in manageable steps, and families contributed information about what children could do at home.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Baby Room, Toddlers, Little Learners, Pre-School 1 and Pre-School 2 form the room sequence, alongside the Library. The names distinguish stages of nursery life rather than describing one shared room for the whole age range. For a family staying from infancy through to preschool, that structure makes room transitions an important part of the experience.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play and activities help children practise communication, movement and growing independence. It is the foundation of nursery education, rather than an extra programme unique to Wood End Road.

In July 2022, staff organised learning around children's interests and divided curriculum goals into smaller steps. They also used information from parents about learning at home when deciding what children should practise next. The practical value is continuity: an achievement outside nursery could inform activities inside it, rather than the two parts of a child's life being treated separately.

Conversation threaded through the day in July 2022. Adults discussed children's activities, asked questions and introduced unfamiliar words; stories and familiar rhymes gave children opportunities to join in. French, music and cooking added different experiences. These were activities children took part in, rather than simply themes on a planning sheet.

Independence had concrete tasks attached to it. In July 2022, children managed their bags and hats, and older children helped themselves to lunch. Babies practised pulling up to stand using walkers, while older children used climbing equipment. The activities changed with children's development, from gaining control of movement to taking responsibility for everyday routines.

Outdoor and Community Life

Trips to nearby shops and a local park were part of children's experiences in July 2022. Those outings connected nursery learning with ordinary places beyond the building. They also complemented the setting's own outdoor area, giving children both on-site play and experiences in the surrounding neighbourhood.

A past World Book Day celebration at Wood End Road involved dressing up, favourite stories and related activities. It gives a concrete example of books becoming shared play, alongside the nursery's dedicated library provision. Reading here has both a physical space and an example of children participating together.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In July 2022, children built close relationships with adults and other children. Staff drew on parents' knowledge when planning learning, and communication helped families understand what their children were working on and how to continue that learning at home. The useful point is the connection between an activity at nursery and a conversation with the family afterwards.

Children also practised social habits in July 2022, including taking turns, using manners and considering other people's views. Cultural celebrations introduced similarities and differences between people. These experiences put relationships into daily practice, through how children played together and how they learnt about others.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the July 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, children making excellent progress from their starting points, and highly effective SEND support involving a SENCO, external services and parents. These are dated judgements, rather than assurances about an individual child's future experience.

The supporting arrangements in July 2022 were specific. The SENCO worked with outside services and involved families in support, while additional funding addressed particular learning and development needs. Safeguarding practice included recruitment checks, checks of nursery spaces and information for parents about internet safety. Children learnt about internet safety too, connecting protection at nursery with habits at home.

Room changes and the move to primary school received attention in July 2022. Staff supported children between rooms, and teachers visited the nursery to meet children in a familiar place and learn about them before the move. The value was information sharing and familiarity, rather than an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7am to 6pm on weekdays, with weekends closed. The nursery operates across the year and closes on Bank Holidays. For working families, the early opening and evening closing provide a substantial daily window, while Bank Holiday closures need to fit household arrangements.

Getting There

The address is 134 Wood End Road, Erdington, Birmingham, B24 8BN. Branch enquiries can be made by telephone on 0121 448 0809, by email to wermanager@littleripley.co.uk or through the Wood End Road contact form.

Funding and Paid Extras

In July 2022, the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact, not a statement of a family's current eligibility or entitlement. Current prices should be obtained in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Room transitions. The room sequence includes Little Learners and two preschool rooms. During a visit, ask how a move between these stages is planned for your child and how familiar adults support it.
  • The daily arrangement. The nursery opens from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and closes on Bank Holidays. What booking pattern and funded-hours charge structure would apply to your child, including meals and non-food consumables?
  • Support for additional needs. The July 2022 arrangements involved a SENCO, external services and parents. Families needing support should discuss how those relationships would work around their child's particular needs.

The Verdict

Wood End Road suits families who value a nursery with separate developmental stages, a dedicated computer and library room, and substantial outdoor play space. Its weekday opening window will also matter to parents organising care around work.

The July 2022 account adds substance: learning was broken into achievable steps, independence was practised through ordinary routines, and staff supported room changes, and future teachers visited before the move to primary school. The appeal is that combination of purposeful activity and practical preparation for change. A visit should centre on the room your child would use and the support needed as they move through nursery life.
