A caterpillar puppet turning into a butterfly captured children's attention in March 2022, giving Kirby Muxloe Day Nursery a memorable example of learning through stories. At its March 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, with children forming friendships, enjoying books and developing independence.
The nursery has capacity for 45 children, accepting ages from 0 to 60 months. Its address is 45 Barwell Road, Kirby Muxloe, Leicester, LE9 2AA. The practical appeal includes weekday opening across the year; the educational picture has strengths alongside specific questions about consistency for younger children.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning and care. In March 2022, this meant babies practising words during water play and preschool children connecting vegetable growing with reading seed packets and making labels for plant pots. Familiar activities gave language and early writing a practical purpose.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar supplied another example that month: a puppet helped children explore the story, while discussion introduced vocabulary about insect development. Babies pushed toy ducks through water as staff repeated simple words. These examples show how adults used objects and conversation to extend children's understanding.
Independence also received attention in March 2022. Children selected their own creative materials, and staff encouraged them to serve dinner and tackle putting on coats. Preschool children planted sweetcorn, beans and cress, bringing growing and written labels together in one activity.
There were limits to the planning. In March 2022, some activities for younger children offered an unsuitable level of difficulty, and concentration slipped. The improvement priorities were clearer learning intentions and challenge matched more closely to each child.
At the March 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described leaders adapting learning and the environment for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Staff understood how to raise welfare concerns, while visitor checks and recruitment procedures supported safeguarding arrangements.
Relationships mattered in March 2022. Children sought comfort from staff, helped friends and practised resolving disagreements through conversation. Staff worked with families on care routines, including toilet training, and shared ideas for learning at home. That partnership connected nursery routines with family life.
However, in March 2022, information about babies' learning did not consistently reach staff covering for familiar practitioners. Some adults consequently lacked a clear understanding of individual babies' abilities. This makes continuity of information a useful subject for a visit, especially for parents choosing baby care.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery opens across the year, closing on bank holidays and between Christmas and New Year. Families planning work cover need to account for those closures.
In March 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated participation fact, rather than a statement about today's funding arrangements.
For families seeking weekday childcare across the year, Kirby Muxloe offers a useful opening window. Its March 2022 strengths included engaging stories, practical independence and cooperative friendships. The balanced judgement rests on those concrete examples, with consistency in baby care and the challenge offered to younger children deserving close attention.
