Brownhill Playgroup

At a Glance

Bicycles indoors and a musical bell for changing activities give Brownhill Playgroup's September 2024 picture a recognisable character: movement, independence and clear routines. Based at Trinity United Reform Church Hall on Brownhill Road in Blackburn, the playgroup has capacity for 40 children.

At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good, found safeguarding effective and judged that children made good progress, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Children attending then were aged two to four. The main improvement concerned how adults and activities were organised during group learning.

The Nursery Experience

In September 2024, children's interests and regular assessments shaped the sequence of learning. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, its everyday expression included conversation, physical play and practising independence.

Indoor movement had real space in the day. Children used scooters, bicycles and push-along toys on courses, while outdoor play involved balancing, jumping, climbing and running. These experiences gave children opportunities to practise coordination in different ways.

Conversation also extended learning. During play, adults introduced vocabulary such as spirit level and chainsaw, adjusting their questions and explanations to individual children. Pretend veterinary play gave children a reason to cooperate, take turns and care for toy animals. Learning was practical and social.

Singing and stories had intended learning goals, but larger group activities did not consistently hold younger children's attention or engage those needing more individual support. This matters because an enthusiastic adult-led activity can still leave some children outside the learning.

Care and Support

In September 2024, staff used details about sleep, breakfast and home activities to help children settle. Children turned to familiar adults for comfort. A musical bell accompanied by a visual signal marked changes in routine, making expectations easier to understand.

Independence developed through ordinary tasks: putting on coats, arranging lunch and managing handwashing and toileting. Younger children received spoken reminders and demonstrations rather than being expected to manage immediately.

For SEND, staff worked with parents to spot gaps in learning, involved other professionals and put individual learning plans into practice. Communication with families combined conversations and an online app, with ideas for continuing learning at home. That linked the playgroup day with family life.

Leaders involved the team in identifying strengths and development priorities. Staff felt supported, and workload and wellbeing were considered alongside improvement.

Practical Information

The address is Trinity United Reform Church Hall, Brownhill Road, Blackburn, BB1 9QY.

In September 2024, attendance was term-time only, Monday to Friday. Session times were 9am to midday on Monday, Tuesday and Friday; Wednesday and Thursday opening hours were 9am to 3pm. That timetable offered different lengths of attendance across the week, rather than the same daily window.

The playgroup provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds in September 2024.

Things to Consider

  • Group learning. In September 2024, younger children and those needing extra support sometimes lost engagement in larger groups. Ask how group activities and adult support are organised now.
  • Attendance timetable. The September 2024 pattern combined shorter sessions on three days with longer opening hours on Wednesday and Thursday. Establish the current booking pattern during a visit if matching childcare to work commitments.

The Verdict

Brownhill's September 2024 picture suits families who value practical independence, active play and close communication about their child's development. Its attendance pattern then could serve families seeking morning sessions or longer days on Wednesday and Thursday. The central consideration is how effectively group learning now includes younger children and those needing additional help.
