Muddy Boots Nursery School Turlin Moor

At a Glance

A woodland nature reserve in the neighbouring field and two outdoor spaces give Muddy Boots Nursery School Turlin Moor a clear outdoor character. Its purpose-built premises sit beside Turlin Moor Children’s Centre in Poole. For children who enjoy exploring materials and spending time outside, the surroundings offer more than an indoor playroom.

At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective. The practical appeal is the combination of separate spaces for different stages of childhood and access to outdoor learning close to the nursery. Teaching challenge and children’s understanding of outdoor safety were the two areas requiring further work.

The nursery accepts children from 3 to 60 months. Attendance choices include a full day, morning and afternoon sessions, plus a later PM Session, giving families several ways to organise care.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

A baby room provides a calmer space for the youngest children. A separate 2year old room sits alongside the 3-4 year old playroom, so the physical arrangement distinguishes babies, toddlers and older children rather than treating them as one group. The two outdoor spaces add opportunities to move beyond the playrooms, while the neighbouring woodland nature reserve extends the setting’s outdoor surroundings.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS sets the framework for children’s learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical exploration help children develop language, physical skills and relationships. Birth to 5 Matters is the guidance used to deliver the curriculum here. It sits alongside that framework rather than replacing it.

In September 2024, learning often grew from children’s own play. In the mud kitchen, children combined leaves with water and mud, imagined making a cake and brought numbers into their pretend cooking. This connected creative exploration with a practical reason to talk and count. Magnetic construction pieces provided another kind of challenge, requiring children to position and join materials carefully.

Books and songs served different ages. During September 2024, babies explored a tactile book and joined action songs, while older children listened to a story about feelings and experimented with the first sounds in names and familiar words. These examples show how language experiences could be woven into play rather than confined to a single organised activity.

The limitation was consistency. In September 2024, activities were not always adjusted sufficiently, or supplemented with resources, to keep every child interested and suitably challenged. An appealing activity therefore did not necessarily offer the right next step for every child taking part.

Outdoor and Community Life

The woodland nature reserve beside the nursery makes outdoor exploration part of its immediate surroundings. Two outdoor spaces also give children places to play on site; families choosing the nursery for its outdoor character have both the premises and the neighbourhood to consider.

In September 2024, outings included the beach, botanical gardens and a nature reserve. Children also visited a train station and went to a farm, where they encountered chickens, held guinea pigs and helped feed goats. These experiences brought animals, transport and the wider community into their learning.

Physical activity included yoga and riding bikes in September 2024. Shopping for pizza toppings connected an outing with food preparation. However, children needed more consistent help to understand safety during outdoor play, especially controlling their speed on bikes and push-along toys.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children developed secure relationships, made good progress and benefited from strong support for communication and language. Settling was a shared process: staff worked with parents and used their knowledge of their child to maintain continuity between home and nursery.

During September 2024, familiar songs helped babies listen and respond, while conversations encouraged older children to express ideas in longer sentences. Staff also used praise to recognise children’s efforts. For parents, the useful detail is the interaction itself: adults responded to what children were doing and helped them put their experiences into words.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Feelings were part of daily conversation in September 2024. Staff encouraged children to discuss emotions, and older children responded to a tired, upset younger child by singing to comfort them. This gave children opportunities to practise care for one another as well as receive it from adults.

The current room arrangement offers a baby space with a quieter character and separate playrooms for older stages. That makes the individual room, as well as the nursery’s outdoor emphasis, relevant when judging how well the setting fits a child’s temperament.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across 51 weeks, with a Christmas closure lasting one week. This is an across-the-year offer rather than care confined to school terms.

A Full Day runs from 8am to 6pm. Morning attendance is 8am to noon, and the afternoon runs from noon to 4pm; the separately listed PM Session covers 4pm to 6pm. The distinction matters: the afternoon session ends before the nursery’s closing time, while the later session covers that final part of the day.

Getting There

The address is Turlin Moor Children’s Centre, Turlin Road, Turlin Moor, Poole, Dorset, BH16 5AH. Driving directions use the school car park, with the nursery at its far end beside the children’s centre.

Enquiries can be made through the contact form by selecting Turlin Moor. A viewing can also be booked.

Funding and Paid Extras

Government funding is accepted from 9months and for 2, 3 and 4 yr olds, alongside voucher schemes. Funded attendance is structured across the nursery’s 51-week year, and private childcare is also offered.

Funded sessions carry a separate Consumable Charge. This needs to be considered alongside the attendance pattern when planning childcare costs; current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Challenge within play. The September 2024 improvement point concerned adapting activities and resources to sustain children’s interest. During a viewing, ask how the same activity is adjusted for children at different stages.
  • Outdoor safety. In September 2024, children needed more consistent guidance on managing speed and control during outdoor wheeled play. Ask how staff now help children recognise risks and practise safer movement.
  • The funded-session bill. A separate Consumable Charge applies to funded attendance across the year. Ask what it covers, including how meals, snacks and supplies from home fit into your chosen sessions.

The Verdict

Muddy Boots Turlin Moor suits families seeking either a full day or shorter morning and afternoon attendance, with an additional later session among the choices. Separate age-stage spaces, two outdoor areas and neighbouring woodland give the setting a recognisable character.

The September 2024 Good judgement provides a positive inspection position, with clear reservations about consistent teaching challenge and outdoor safety learning. For families drawn to outdoor exploration, those are useful points to weigh alongside the room arrangement and the funded-session charge structure.
