Little Acorns Montessori School Ascot

At a Glance

A pirate ship climbing frame outside and two contrasting stages indoors give Little Acorns Montessori School Ascot a clear identity: younger children have their own sensory spaces, while older children use a spacious hall for imaginative play and hands-on learning. Based at St Peters Hall, Hatchet Lane, Windsor, SL4 2EG, the nursery takes children from 24 months through to school age. Its approach gives families a gradual start, with attendance built up over time.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and concluded that children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), made good progress from their starting points. That judgement sits alongside two important teaching priorities: clearer learning intentions for younger children and more opportunities for quieter children to contribute.

Attendance is term-time only, with morning and afternoon choices and separately charged clubs before and after the main opening hours. The combination of separate age spaces and a substantial garden is the strongest practical reason to consider this branch.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Little Oaks Room gives two-year-olds a pair of indoor spaces and an outdoor messy garden, combining simplified Montessori resources with sensory activities that support language, physical skills and social development. This creates a smaller-scale starting point before children move towards the older group. Younger children also spend time in the older room and larger garden, making those spaces familiar before a move.

Mighty Oaks Room occupies a bright hall, with areas for drawing and crafts, miniature-world play and role play alongside Montessori-inspired resources. Themes respond to children's interests. The emphasis is on exploring materials and developing ideas, with stories, movement and creative activities providing different ways to participate.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play supports communication, physical development and learning to manage relationships and feelings. Montessori adds an emphasis on hands-on exploration and increasing independence; at Ascot, this takes physical form in the rooms' arranged activity areas and the younger children's simplified materials.

In July 2023, older children used crates and other resources to construct a pretend bus, then developed the idea into a performance for friends and staff. That example captures the connection between construction, cooperation and imaginative play. Younger children explored sensory materials outdoors, learning vocabulary while investigating whether objects stayed on the surface of water or dropped below it.

Mathematical ideas also grew from practical activity in July 2023. Children grouped objects, compared shapes and used an outdoor tape measure to explore differences in height. These were tangible ways to connect words and numbers with things children could handle and compare.

The weaker point was teaching for younger children. In July 2023, some toddler activities did not match children's stage of development closely enough, and staff did not consistently understand the intended learning. The implication is specific: attractive resources need purposeful adult support if younger children are to stay involved.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden offers a pirate ship climbing frame with a slide, a mud kitchen, planting space and a quieter area. Bikes and scooters add movement, while sand and water give children materials to manipulate and investigate. Children use the outdoor space daily, so outdoor play is part of the ordinary routine rather than an occasional addition.

In July 2023, outdoor activity included balancing along beams, climbing and kicking balls. Watering cans and gardening tools supported pouring and filling. Together, these experiences linked physical coordination with investigation, giving children more than one reason to spend time outside.

Care and Support

Independence has practical roots here. In July 2023, children served snacks using utensils, poured drinks and cleared their cups and plates. Staff offered guidance as children removed their shoes, leaving them to complete the task themselves. These small responsibilities gave children opportunities to practise skills they would use beyond nursery.

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children developed trusting relationships with staff, that cooperation with outside specialists and local authority services supported the nursery's work, and that staff sometimes missed chances to draw younger and quieter children into conversations. The balance matters: supportive relationships were evident, but children's confidence also depended on adults making space for less vocal participants.

Communication with families in July 2023 combined spoken updates with an online app. Staff also used visual prompts and signing to help children understand routines following training in communication and language. For families, those are concrete examples of how information moved between adults and how children received help to understand the day.

The current room arrangement supports the move from Little Oaks Room to Mighty Oaks Room through opportunities to use the older group's spaces beforehand. That is a useful bridge: a room change can involve familiar surroundings rather than an entirely new setting.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Main opening hours are 9am to 3pm during school terms. Morning and afternoon attendance choices are offered across the weekday enquiry form, and sessions are booked in three-hour blocks. The nursery also supports starting with fewer hours or days and increasing attendance over time.

Breakfast club runs from 8am to 9am. After school club operates from 3pm to 4pm, Monday to Thursday. These extend the term-time day, but families needing care during school holidays will need a separate arrangement.

Funding and Paid Extras

Government-funded childcare is accepted. Funding options include up to 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks from the term after a child's third birthday, alongside two-year-old funding and 30-hour funding for eligible families. Additional non-funded hours are charged separately; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Parents supply a lunchbox, while breakfast is included in the breakfast club charge. The lunch hour falls between noon and 1pm: there is no extra hourly charge when it is covered by funded hours, while the hourly charge applies when it falls outside them.

Getting There

The address is St Peters Hall on Hatchet Lane, Windsor, SL4 2EG. This is a hall-based setting in a rural area, with indoor space and the garden forming the main environment for the nursery day.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching for younger children. In July 2023, some toddler activities were pitched poorly and learning intentions were not consistently understood. During a visit, ask how staff now choose activities for Little Oaks Room and adapt them to individual children.
  • Quieter children's participation. Encouraging younger and less vocal children to express ideas was a July 2023 improvement priority. Ask how practitioners include a child who watches first or rarely volunteers to speak.
  • Term-time coverage. Main hours run from 9am to 3pm, with after school club ending at 4pm on Monday to Thursday. Compare that pattern with your working day and school-holiday needs.
  • Tour arrangements. Book through the Ascot enquiry form; tours take place on Monday to Thursday at 11am or 2pm, and the nursery contacts families after receiving the form. Use the visit to ask how personal care supplies are handled alongside the parent-provided lunchbox.

The Verdict

Little Acorns Ascot suits families seeking term-time morning or afternoon attendance, including those who want to build hours gradually, with breakfast and after school clubs extending some days. Little Oaks Room, Mighty Oaks Room and the outdoor climbing and sensory spaces give the offer a recognisable shape.

The July 2023 findings provide a positive quality judgement, balanced by clear questions about teaching younger children and involving quieter voices. For parents of a two-year-old, the most useful visit will concentrate on adult interaction as well as the rooms and garden. The spaces offer plenty to explore; the important decision is how that exploration becomes purposeful learning for your child.
