Conkers carried by wheelbarrow to a mud kitchen give Great Ellingham Pre-School a recognisable character: practical play with children working together. In October 2024, this was one example of children organising a shared task rather than playing separately.
At its October 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the setting Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that staff adapted learning with external professionals for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The pre-school has 26 places in total; children attending at that visit were aged two to four.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care, connecting play with communication, physical skills and growing independence. In October 2024, children practised counting and recognising their names during carpet time; signing was also used during the daily welcome song.
Outdoor play had tangible resources: a mud kitchen and an all-weather sandpit shed. Children gathered conkers in saucepans, moved them by wheelbarrow and used them in pretend cooking. Lavender-scented dough gave children something to shape with cutters, rolling pins and plastic scissors while discussing their creations.
Teaching needed more stretch. In October 2024, counting activities did not consistently help children connect container size with how much each could hold. Activities also sometimes needed factual books or real objects to make unfamiliar words and ideas easier to understand. These are useful distinctions between keeping children occupied and taking their thinking further.
In October 2024, staff's conversations drew on children's ideas and experiences at home. Children handled familiar routines with increasing independence, including handwashing and finding their lunch boxes. Turn-taking and cooperation were taught through shared play, giving everyday tasks a social purpose.
Communication with families also mattered. In October 2024, parents described several ways of receiving updates about experiences and learning, and felt comfortable raising questions. Families of children with SEND valued practical help with referrals and access to support services.

In October 2024, opening hours were 8.50am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, during term time. That timetable concentrated attendance into four weekdays rather than a five-day week. Funded early education for children aged two, three and four was also offered at that time.
Great Ellingham Pre-School suits families drawn to practical, cooperative play who can accommodate the term-time, four-day timetable described in October 2024. Its October 2024 strengths included everyday independence and useful communication with parents. The key educational question is how effectively staff now extend children's reasoning beyond the first answer.
