Bright Horizons Poppetts Day Nursery

At a Glance

An all-weather garden reached directly from every room gives Poppetts a clear outdoor character: children can move between indoor play and gardening, construction and physical activity throughout their nursery day. Bright Horizons Poppetts Day Nursery, on Long Ridings Avenue in Hutton, has capacity for 68 children aged 3 months to 5 years.

At its April 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found effective safeguarding arrangements, close relationships between children and their key staff, and a well-delivered curriculum, while identifying missed learning opportunities in some everyday routines. Those findings need to be considered alongside a later organisational safeguarding notice issued to the provider in June 2026.

For families, the strongest practical attractions are the outdoor access, sleeping pods in the baby room and everyday essentials included in private fees. Funded childcare follows a separate charging structure, with entitlement stretched across the year.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The baby room combines sleeping pods and feeding chairs with cushioned, cosy spaces and resources suited to babies, giving rest and feeding a place alongside exploration. These arrangements accommodate babies' changing sleep and feeding needs.

Messy play, baking, crafts and gardening shape the toddler room's activities, with visits to the local library and greengrocer extending learning into the surrounding community. The emphasis is practical: children have opportunities to make things, handle materials and explore familiar places beyond nursery.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care, bringing communication, movement, relationships and exploration into everyday play. At Poppetts, current activities include Italian lessons and Boogie Mites sessions; Talking Tots is taught to toddlers and preschool children by an external teacher. These add named sessions to the day, although the names alone should not determine a family's choice.

In April 2025, babies explored objects concealed in boxes and joined action songs connected with what they discovered. Staff used those interests to practise emerging speech and movement. Older children undertook tasks independently, connecting learning with things they could do for themselves.

Candyfloss, the nursery mascot, also had a practical role in April 2025: staff used it to explain safe behaviour, including careful movement indoors and keeping sand from being thrown. In preschool group activities, adults helped children take turns and talk through the feelings behind difficult behaviour. For parents, those examples give substance to the nursery's approach to social development.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden has safety flooring and astroturf, with a mud kitchen, sandpit, water troughs and a pebble construction area. Bikes and scooters offer movement; dens and chalkboards create further ways to play and communicate. Direct access from every room makes this space relevant to the youngest children as well as preschoolers.

Weekly eco school sessions give preschool children a recurring environmental activity, alongside opportunities to grow plants and herbs. In April 2025, children connected food-waste collection with compost for their plants, examined plant structures and followed birds nesting in boxes. That made care for living things concrete: children could see what their actions changed.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In April 2025, babies sought comfort from familiar staff when tired or unsettled, while key staff across the rooms knew children's circumstances, interests and learning needs. Activities were planned around that knowledge. For a parent weighing a baby's first separation from home, familiar adults and individual responses are more useful indicators than a general promise of care.

Families were regularly invited to take part in learning in April 2025, with conversations about children's progress and ideas for continuing activities at home. Staff also recognised families' customs and cultures. This gave parent communication a purpose beyond exchanging basic daily information.

The branch offers Settling In Sessions to help families become familiar with the nursery before starting. The group-wide Nurture Approach, also used in the branch's description of its offer, brings emotional wellbeing together with learning and care; it sits alongside the early years foundation stage rather than replacing it.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Ofsted's compliance outcome dated 22 June 2026 recorded a Welfare Requirements Notice requiring the provider to strengthen organisational safeguarding leadership, oversight, implementation of procedures, responses to concerns and staff training by 1 August 2026, specifying that the actions did not represent concerns identified at every individual setting. The outcome identified serious failings in how safeguarding was led, governed, monitored and carried out across the organisation in some settings, and found that the provider had not demonstrated consistently effective safeguarding across its provision. These organisational findings do not establish a breach at Poppetts, but carry separate weight alongside the branch's April 2025 safeguarding judgement.

In April 2025, toddler mealtimes included practising safe use of cutlery, serving food and clearing away, while preschool children talked with adults eating alongside them. However, snack periods and handwashing sometimes lost opportunities for learning because of their organisation. Everyday routines were the specific improvement point, rather than an incidental footnote to the Good judgement.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Poppetts opens Monday to Friday from 7:45am to 6:00pm. Care runs across the year, with closures for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Families needing care through school holidays therefore have a different attendance calendar from a term-time setting.

Funded childcare is delivered in 10-hour sessions beginning when the nursery opens. Attendance beyond that funded session is charged as additional childcare; buying those extra hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. Private care is also offered, with fees paid ahead of attendance through monthly direct debit.

Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01277 289 123. Personal tours can be booked through the branch's visit form.

Getting There

The address is Long Ridings Avenue, Hutton, CM13 1DU; the nursery also uses Shenfield in its location description and gives the journey as 5 mins walk from Shenfield station, which is on the Elizabeth line. Onsite parking and a buggy park support journeys with young children.

Poppetts is next to Long Ridings Primary school and occupies school grounds. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place, so families still need to use the local authority admissions process for a state-school application.

Funding and Paid Extras

For eligible children, the funding arrangements include 30 Hrs for 9 Months and 2 Years, and 15 Hrs or 30 Hrs for 3's-5's. Entitlement is stretched over 50 weeks rather than delivered solely in term time. That distinction matters when matching funded childcare to the family's weekly attendance needs.

Private fees include meals and snacks, alongside nappies, wipes and formula milk for babies under 1 year; an onsite chef supports the food provision. For funded hours, food is charged separately, with a non-mandatory charge that is not a condition of accessing a funded place.

Consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by Bright Horizons. A registration charge applies, and current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Families should distinguish the childcare entitlement from food and any additional private hours when considering the total arrangement.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The 22 June 2026 notice required changes by 1 August 2026. Before joining, ask how those changes affect safeguarding oversight, concern escalation and staff supervision at Poppetts.
  • Everyday learning. Snack periods and handwashing were the April 2025 improvement point. During a tour, ask how these routines now keep children involved and learning.
  • Funded attendance and extras. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks and delivered through 10-hour sessions starting at opening time. Compare the written quotation with your intended attendance, including separately charged food and any additional hours.
  • Named sessions. Talking Tots involves an external teacher, while Italian lessons, Boogie Mites and weekly eco school sessions add to the activity programme. Use a visit to discuss what each involves for your child's age and interests.

The Verdict

Poppetts suits families who value direct garden access, practical activities and care extending across the year, including those using stretched funded sessions and those paying privately for weekday childcare. The baby room's sleeping pods and the toddler room's community visits give different ages a recognisable offer.

The April 2025 judgement provides a positive assessment of the branch, with a specific concern about learning during routine tasks. The later organisational safeguarding notice carries separate weight. A decision to join should account for both, alongside whether the funded-session structure and closure calendar fit family life.
