Woodland is the classroom here. Bee In The Woods Kindergarten, Portslade spends its days in Foredown Woods, with rope bridges, a campfire gathering place and shelters for play and rest rather than a conventional indoor nursery layout. This is a substantial choice about how a child spends their early years: nature supplies the materials, the changing surroundings and much of the day's activity.
At its 16 November 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the kindergarten Outstanding overall and across all assessed areas. The current setting has 20 places for children aged 36 to 60 months; separate home-education and holiday activities extend the wider offer to older children. Those services have their own arrangements and should be distinguished from the preschool provision.
The strongest practical attraction is the combination of an entirely outdoor day with recognisable places for different activities. Squirrels' Wood has physical play equipment and a mud kitchen, while the Longhouse provides somewhere to create or take a quieter break. Term-time full days and funded morning or afternoon half days serve different family routines.
The EYFS guides early-years learning: children develop language, movement, social understanding and early mathematical ideas through play and everyday activities. At Portslade, that learning takes place outdoors, with songs, stories, gardening and exploration woven into the day. Nature is the material children work with, rather than an occasional outing from an indoor base.
Forest School adds practical woodland experiences, including making things, using tools and cooking over a fire. Portslade also draws on Froebel, Reggio Emilia, Te Whakiri and Scandinavian Forest Schools; the concrete common thread is that children's interests help shape what they do. The useful distinction for parents is the freedom to pursue an idea through play alongside planned activities, rather than the collection of approach names itself.
A typical day moves between shared gatherings and time for individual exploration. A welcome song and snack precede free play, with circle time bringing stories, games and word play before lunch. Afternoons can include music, gardening, exploration or quieter time in the Longhouse. The day ends with a snack and a chance to reflect together, giving an outdoor routine recognisable points of connection.
In November 2021, children grew vegetables and then harvested and cooked them, connecting food with the work needed to produce it. Leftovers went into compost, opening up discussion about insects and soil. Another activity used a map and clues to find hidden nursery rhymes. These examples show how woodland learning could bring language, investigation and practical tasks into the same experience.
Squirrels' Wood combines dens and swings with rope bridges and a mud kitchen, so children can move between climbing, construction and imaginative play. Foxes' Wood contains the Longhouse, a substantial shelter used for rest as well as creative activity. The Roundhouse provides another sheltered place for play and making things. Outdoor provision here includes places to pause, too.
Robins' Nest is the campfire gathering area, combining communal cooking with storytelling and singing. The Wildlife Pond sits outside the kindergarten camp and provides a destination for watching wildlife; occasional adventure walks explore the wider Foredown Woods. These are different uses of the same surroundings, from a settled gathering place to a changing environment to investigate.
Beach School takes Portslade children to Hove Lagoon Beach on Tuesdays, adding a coastal setting to their woodland experience. Children explore tides and seasonal changes, with activities such as looking at crab habitats, watching birds and collecting litter. It is a whole day at the beach, with a separate collection arrangement, rather than a brief excursion during the woodland day.
Weekly music, yoga and gardening add other ways to move, listen and make things. Gardening Club also appears in the afternoon routine, alongside pond exploration and small-group games. For families choosing this kindergarten, the appeal is the repeated use of natural surroundings combined with activities that give children different ways to participate.
The autumn 2026 settling arrangements included an initial week of half days for all early-years children, including returning children, alongside home visits for new starters. That staged beginning matters in an outdoor setting: families need to plan for a shorter initial day, and children have time to become familiar with the routine before attending for longer.
In November 2021, staff discussed individual children's interests and development during weekly meetings and used those discussions to plan activities. Children also had shared discussion times in which they contributed ideas and listened to one another. The care and learning arrangements were closely connected: adults used what they knew about each child to decide what to offer next.
At that time, the team included nine staff members, with seven holding qualified teacher status and one holding early years teacher status. These are inspection-era staffing figures. The current Portslade team includes a SENCO and deputy-manager role, providing a specific point of responsibility for special educational needs and disabilities rather than leaving support as a general promise.
At the November 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective, with staff recognising potential signs of harm and understanding how to respond to concerns. Children also practised assessing woodland risks: they checked branches before climbing and learnt rules about plants and berries. That dated finding gives substance to the balance between adventurous play and adult oversight.
The daily routine includes rest and quieter activity in the Longhouse. An entirely outdoor offer still needs somewhere for a child who wants to stop moving, listen to a story or take a break from a busy game. Here, the shelter has a stated role in that quieter part of the day, alongside its use for imaginative and creative play.
The kindergarten is at Foredown Woods, Foredown Allotments, Thornbush Crescent, Portslade, Brighton, BN41 2GW. Its core opening hours are 9.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, during term time, following Brighton and Hove term dates.
The Full Day runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Breakfast Club is optional and operates from 8.30am to 9.30am, while Extra Playtime runs from 3.30pm to 4pm. Fully funded half days are offered as either a morning session, 9.30am to 12.30pm, or an afternoon session, 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The minimum attendance requirement is two days each week.
September and April are the regular intake points. The waiting-list process precedes a showaround, and joining the list does not guarantee a place. Booking priorities include siblings, proximity to the woodland and requests for two or more days. Kindergarten enquiries use the dedicated enquiry and waiting-list form.
BEE WILD Holiday Club offers woodland activities outside term time, including construction, natural crafts and campfire cooking. Its arrangements are separate from kindergarten attendance, so families planning childcare across the year need to consider both services rather than treating a term-time booking as year-round cover.
The Number 6 Bus connects Brighton Train Station with Downs Park and stops at Sycamore Close, at the end of Thornbush Crescent. Drivers are asked to park towards the start of Thornbush Crescent and continue on foot to the allotments; parking is free.
The 15 funded universal hours are offered across 38 weeks, with five funded hours per day, up to three days a week. Additional hours are charged separately. On sessions containing funded hours, the nursery asks for a voluntary extras contribution covering additional Forest School services, food and consumables; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation and its fees information.
Full-day fees include vegetarian snacks and drinks, while Beach School children bring a packed lunch. Food within the funded-session extras contribution includes fruit and campfire treats; families using fully funded half days supply their own snacks.
For funded sessions with extras, consumables such as hand towels and sun cream sit within that separate contribution. Fully funded half days also require families to supply waterproof clothing and may exclude activities needing greater adult supervision, including woodwork and campfire cooking. The choice therefore affects the experience as well as the hours attended.
A non-refundable enrolment charge includes an all-weather suit and enrolment processing; opting out also means opting out of the suit, home visit and Stay & Play sessions. Notice is one month for funded places and six weeks for non-funded places, with the notice period falling within term time and fees payable throughout it.
Bee In The Woods Kindergarten, Portslade suits families who want outdoor learning to shape the whole preschool day. Squirrels' Wood, Robins' Nest and the Wildlife Pond give that choice practical substance, while the Longhouse provides a place for quieter activity. The November 2021 Outstanding judgement is strong dated support for the approach, rather than a substitute for considering its everyday demands.
The attendance offer serves families seeking term-time full days, potentially with Breakfast Club or Extra Playtime, and those choosing funded morning or afternoon half days. The important trade-off is that fully funded half days may include a different activity offer. Choose it for the woodland experience and the pattern that fits your child, with weather clothing, settling time and beach-day logistics part of the decision.
Ofsted rated it Outstanding overall at the inspection on 16 November 2021, with Outstanding judgements across all assessed areas.
