A converted house, a large private garden and a toddler room with its own ball pool give Hopscotch Hove Station a clear character. This is a setting where movement has space indoors as well as outside, while regular outings extend children's experiences to Hove seafront and nearby parks.
Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding on 19 May 2022. It has capacity for 44 children, with an accepted age range from 3 months to 5 years. Those are whole-nursery places, rather than the size of any individual group.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. In everyday terms, that brings language, physical development, relationships and early thinking skills into play and routines, rather than treating learning as a separate part of the day.
In May 2022, children practised self-care by washing dolls, using sponges, pipettes and toothbrushes. The activity brought several strands together: handling small tools exercised their hands, naming body parts developed language, and washing hair introduced a practical care task. Everyday experiences became opportunities to learn.
Older children used cubes to arrange colours and patterns, then compared the height of their towers. In the garden, block building continued despite the wind interrupting their plans. These examples gave children problems to solve with their hands and ideas, with room to try again when a construction failed.
Books also received sustained attention in May 2022. Children brought stories from home to share, while staff encouraged older children to use a book's cover to anticipate its contents and explained unfamiliar vocabulary. Younger children shared picture books close to familiar adults. The experience connected conversation, listening and enjoyment of stories across different ages.
Hopscotch Explorers is the group's outdoor programme, used here for regular visits to parks, nature spots and Hove seafront. It takes learning beyond the garden and gives children contact with their local surroundings. The frequency is regular, rather than a fixed weekly promise.
Within the nursery, the large private garden supports daily outdoor play. Equipment sits alongside opportunities for children to decide how to use the space, giving active play and their own ideas room to develop. The toddler room's soft play area, including a slide and ball pool, adds an indoor setting for climbing, movement and shared play.
Physical experiences were varied in May 2022 too. Babies practised negotiating steps, older children kicked balls towards one another, and a familiar story prompted imaginative movement. These were different ways of exercising coordination, from early climbing to controlling a ball and matching movement to a story.
At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, responsive relationships that helped babies and new children settle, and excellent progress for children including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. These are dated findings, with the relationships and the support for individual development carrying more meaning than the grade alone.
In May 2022, babies explored while returning to familiar adults for reassurance. Staff responded warmly, and children shared their work with adults who recognised their achievements. Displays of children's creations gave their efforts a place in the nursery environment. For a parent thinking about an early separation, these examples show how reassurance and recognition worked together at that time.
Respect for different backgrounds appeared in everyday interactions in May 2022. Children greeted one another in different languages, and staff challenged limiting stereotypes through their messages and examples. This brought inclusion into ordinary conversation and play.
Little Tums supplies catered meals, with vegetarian, dairy-free and vegan choices; families can instead send a packed lunch. Breakfast, snacks, organic milk and baby formula are included, while hot lunches and teas are paid additions, so the food arrangement can be matched to the family's preferences.
The nursery is at 49a Goldstone Villas, Hove, BN3 3RT. It opens on weekdays from 7.30am to 6.30pm and offers full-day care. The opening window is useful for organising work and collection, but it should be kept separate from the hours of an individual booking.
Care runs across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for a week at Christmas. Families whose work continues during those periods will need to account for those breaks in their childcare arrangements.
The branch contact is 01273 711480 or hovestation@hopscotchmail.com. Visits can be booked, and the nursery invites families to join its waiting list. That is a booking route, rather than an indication of how many places are free.
Hove train station is nearby, making the Goldstone Villas address relevant for families whose routine includes rail travel. The converted house also gives this branch a different physical setting from a purpose-built nursery building.
Hopscotch Hove Station accepts 15 and 30 hours of government-funded childcare. Eligibility determines which entitlement a family can use; accepting funding does not guarantee an individual funded place or booking pattern.
Nappies and suncream are included alongside the food essentials described above. Hot meals remain separate paid additions, with a packed lunch as the alternative. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, allowing families to consider childcare and their chosen meal arrangement together.
Hopscotch Hove Station suits families seeking full-day care in a converted house, with daily garden play and an indoor movement space for toddlers. Its proximity to Hove train station adds practical value for rail-using families, while the choice between catered hot meals and a packed lunch gives parents control over that part of the day.
