In April 2026, garden challenges, action songs and children serving their own lunch illustrated Stepping Stones' practical emphasis: learning involved doing things for yourself. This Bristol nursery has capacity for 38 children, accepting ages from 3 to 60 months.
At its April 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged all six education and care areas to meet the Expected standard, with safeguarding standards met. The detail gives parents a balanced picture: secure relationships and purposeful routines, alongside improvements needed in staff coaching, communication support and the representation of diversity.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, its breadth translates into physical play, stories, conversation and opportunities to practise independence.
In April 2026, older children used a garden obstacle course to develop balance and controlled jumping, while younger children climbed and poured water between containers. These were different ways of practising coordination. Outdoor number activities also brought mathematics into play: children searched for numerals and arranged them in order.
Books and songs had a place across the age groups in April 2026. Babies explored books for themselves, toddlers copied movements during action songs, and older children listened for sustained periods to stories. Shared drawings gave older children another reason to talk, as they discussed the characters they were making together.
Learning also happened through everyday responsibilities. In April 2026, younger children helped apply their sun cream, while older children prepared their place for lunch and helped themselves to food. Children tidied the garden before younger children used it. Those small tasks made independence part of the day rather than a separate activity.
Before children started, staff gathered information from their families in April 2026, helping them understand individual needs and familiar routines. The key person provided a consistent relationship, and babies sought comfort from practitioners when they needed it. This made family knowledge relevant to daily care.
At the April 2026 inspection, Ofsted found effective key-person arrangements and early identification of learning needs, including support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, but inconsistent communication strategies left some children needing clearer help with routines and transitions. Equipment had been obtained to reduce environmental noise, giving a concrete example of support tailored to a child's needs.
In April 2026, staff talked children through care tasks such as applying sun cream and reinforced safe spacing around the garden obstacle course. Mealtimes also involved conversation with adults sitting alongside children, connecting self-care with opportunities to communicate.
