Magic Moments at Barnt Green

At a Glance

Sheep in local fields, journeys by train and collages made with collected leaves give Magic Moments at Barnt Green a recognisable character in its April 2024 account of nursery life. Everyday experiences became material for play and conversation. At its 9 April 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective.

At 23 Hewell Road, Barnt Green, Birmingham, B45 8NG, the nursery has capacity for 60 children, with an age range of 3 to 60 months.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical exploration contribute to their learning. In April 2024, activities followed children's interests, giving them something familiar to investigate and discuss.

Babies explored texture by crushing cereal in their hands. Older children used sticks and leaves gathered during forest school to make collages, connecting outdoor exploration with creative work. Pictures of sheep followed a visit to local fields. These were concrete experiences children could revisit through making and talking.

During that month, outdoor play included running, jumping and steering wheeled toys around obstacles. Walks reached a local park, while visits to the nearby railway station included train journeys. Conversation developed alongside these experiences: staff introduced simple words to younger children and encouraged older children to explain their ideas and recall family adventures.

Care and Support

At the April 2024 inspection, Ofsted found good support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and good progress, supported by communication with parents and cooperation with other agencies.

In April 2024, staff responded to individual routines and needs throughout the day. Calm speech and encouragement helped children understand expectations; one child noticed a friend needed cutlery and alerted an adult. That small example shows the practical kindness being encouraged.

Communication also connected learning across nursery stages and home. During that month, staff exchanged information as children moved through the nursery, kept parents informed about progress and offered ideas for continuing learning at home. Staff meetings and supervision provided opportunities to discuss practice and training.

Practical Information

In April 2024, opening hours were 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year. Funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-old children at that time.

These dated arrangements give families a useful starting point when considering how nursery attendance fits their working week.

Things to Consider

  • Foyer access. In April 2024, some parents occasionally admitted other parents despite the door policy; further locked doors were monitored by staff, and the risk was assessed as minimal. Ask how the policy is reinforced during a visit.
  • Different family structures. In April 2024, books and resources represented different backgrounds and abilities, but representation of families unlike children's own needed further development. This matters for children recognising both their own family and others.
  • Attendance and funding. The April 2024 arrangements combined year-round opening with funded early education. What attendance pattern and funded-hours arrangement would apply to your child?

The Verdict

Magic Moments at Barnt Green suits families who value learning drawn from real experiences, with outdoor activity and conversation central to its April 2024 nursery life. The Good judgement gives that account weight. The April 2024 improvement points concerned reinforcement of the foyer door policy and broader representation of family structures.
