Sensory play, lively storytelling and close relationships with a key person give Sandhills Day Nursery Alvechurch its clearest character in September 2023. Children experimented with containers in water and sand, created pictures and played imaginative hairdressing games. These are concrete starting points for children who enjoy making, moving and pretending.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 7 September 2023. Today, it accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 75 places in total. Its address is 49 Swan Street, Alvechurch, Birmingham, B48 7RR.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning and care, bringing play, communication and physical development into the nursery day. In September 2023, activities covered the learning areas and introduced skills in stages, building on what children could already do.
Storytelling offered something for different developmental stages: younger children responded to pictures with sounds, while older children discussed the words and images. Questions invited children to contribute rather than simply listen. Outdoors, running and climbing gave them opportunities to practise movement; creative work let them experiment with materials.
There was a limitation. In September 2023, staff did not consistently turn their knowledge of individual children into activities that sustained their interest. Some children drifted away from the learning. Improving that connection between a child's interests and the activity offered was an explicit priority, alongside better use of staff supervision and observation to strengthen teaching.
In September 2023, settling visits were adjusted to individual children, helping them become familiar with their key person. Babies received attentive comfort when distressed, and children approached staff when they needed help. For families concerned about separation, the useful detail is the individual settling arrangement rather than a fixed timetable.
Communication also had substance in September 2023. Staff gathered medical and dietary information before children started, discussed learning with parents and shared ways to continue it at home. They exchanged information with other childcare settings children attended, helping connect care across different days.
At the September 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found that staff used developmental assessments, discussions with parents, professional referrals and individual plans to support children whose development raised significant concerns. Sleep checks and supervision during eating and play were part of care at that time.
Emotional guidance was less consistent in September 2023. Some practitioners needed stronger skills in helping children manage feelings and understand how their behaviour affected others. Reminders about rules did not always give children that explanation.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 6pm, across the year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas. That opening window is useful for planning a working day, while the seasonal closures matter when arranging alternative care.
In September 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. Balanced meals were served at that time.
Sandhills suits Alvechurch families seeking year-round weekday care, with an opening window that accommodates an early start. Its September 2023 picture combines individual settling and engaging everyday play with clear questions about consistent teaching and emotional guidance. Those questions deserve attention alongside the Good judgement.
