Hawkslade Farm Pre-School

At a Glance

Books to borrow and plenty of outdoor play characterised Hawkslade Farm Pre-School at its July 2023 inspection. Based at Hawkslade Farm Community Centre in Aylesbury, it has capacity for 48 children. Ofsted rated it Good on 3 July 2023.

At that visit, children were aged two to four. The account combined practical independence, shared play and confident communication, with two clear priorities: more consistent teaching and longer stretches of play before routines interrupted them.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2023, outdoor activity occupied a substantial part of the day. Bikes gave children opportunities to practise coordination, while large construction blocks brought physical effort into their play. Sand exploration involved handling different textures and transferring material between containers.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the July 2023 examples included conversation, construction and early mark-making: staff invited children to explain experiences and opinions, and children experimented with stencils and outdoor chalk drawing.

A nursery library lent books for families to share at home. That extended reading beyond the setting. During the same visit, older children helped younger ones shape play dough, while three-dimensional model-making held children's attention. These examples gave children opportunities to practise both cooperation and concentration.

Care and Support

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children settled comfortably, relationships with staff were strong, partnership with parents was good and safeguarding arrangements were effective.

In July 2023, parents knew the next steps in their children's learning and received help to continue that learning at home. Managers sought feedback and responded promptly, giving families a practical role in shaping their children's experience.

Everyday independence also featured in that month's account. Children served their own snacks, and staff encouraged them to attempt tasks themselves as preparation for school. Turn-taking and sharing were supported through daily interactions rather than left for children to manage alone.

Practical Information

The address is Hawkslade Farm Community Centre, Barley Crescent, Aylesbury, HP21 9YL.

In July 2023, opening hours were 8.30am to 3pm on weekdays, with attendance during term time. At that date, the pre-school received funding for free early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. Those are dated arrangements rather than a statement of today's booking terms.

Things to Consider

  • Time to finish play. In July 2023, changes of activity sometimes cut construction short. Longer uninterrupted periods were an improvement priority, relevant for children who become deeply absorbed in making things.
  • Extending learning. Staff did not consistently use children's next learning steps while teaching in July 2023. More consistent follow-through was the other improvement priority.
  • Planning attendance. The July 2023 pattern was term-time provision ending at 3pm. On a visit, what are the current attendance options and funding arrangements for your child's age?

The Verdict

Hawkslade Farm will appeal to families choosing preschool care who value the outdoor activity, home reading and growing independence described in its July 2023 assessment. Its July 2023 assessment provides a positive basis for that interest, alongside specific reservations about teaching consistency and interrupted play. The practical fit also depends on how its attendance arrangements match the family's week.
