Bear's House Day Nursery

At a Glance

Sensory lights for babies and garden storytelling for older children characterised daily life at Bear's House Day Nursery in February 2022. At its February 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall, with a Good judgement for education. That assessment provides a useful starting point, while the daily experiences below belong to that period.

Based at Norset House on West View Road, Halifax, HX3 6PE, the nursery has 38 places for children aged 0 to 60 months. Capacity describes the whole setting, rather than the number sharing an individual room.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2022, babies explored lights in the sensory room and practised moving during tummy time. These were concrete opportunities to explore sensations and develop physical skills. Older children experimented with colour combinations; younger children investigated how paint felt. The same activity could therefore accommodate different stages of development.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, its practical expression in February 2022 included play, conversation, stories and opportunities to become more independent.

Books also became movement: children recreated a bear hunt story outdoors, using different movements around the garden. Outings that February included the library, local park and museums reached by bus, extending experiences beyond nursery rooms. Activities followed children's interests, including a conversation about caterpillars that led to butterfly painting.

Care and Support

At the February 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, parent partnerships good and additional support organised through individual plans and work with other professionals. Those findings describe the nursery at that date.

Communication in February 2022 combined daily diaries, learning books, photographs and spoken updates. Parents had several ways to follow activities and learning. Staff also worked with the local health visitor, using the progress check at ages two to three to identify next steps.

Independence featured in everyday routines that February. Older children washed their hands before meals and served themselves milk and fruit; babies were encouraged to try feeding themselves. Staff knew children well and gave attention to settling into the nursery.

Two improvements mattered. In February 2022, adults sometimes intervened in unwanted behaviour without explaining its effect on others, and sometimes gave children too little time to contribute their own ideas. Both concern how adults help children develop understanding, rather than simply manage an activity.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and Christmas.

In February 2022, funded education was provided for children aged two, three and four. This is a dated description of participation, rather than a promise about an individual family's entitlement.

Things to Consider

  • Conversation and behaviour. The February 2022 improvement points concerned response time and explaining behaviour's effects. A visit is an opportunity to see how practitioners handle both during play.
  • Attendance planning. The opening window runs from 7.30am to 5.30pm. What booking patterns and funded-hours arrangements would fit your family's week?

The Verdict

Bear's House suits families seeking care across the year; its February 2022 experiences will also interest parents who value sensory exploration, storytelling and outings. Its February 2022 assessment was positive, with specific improvements around adult interaction. For parents, the most useful distinction is between that dated account of daily life and the practical opening hours that shape the working week.
