Den building, minibeast searches and conversations led by children give Elland Nursery's June 2022 nursery day its character. Adults helped children tackle challenges together, stepping in to extend an activity or allowing them to work things out themselves. Play had purpose.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 15 June 2022. Today, Elland Nursery has capacity for 30 children, with accepted ages from 3 to 60 months, at Elland Childrens Centre on Westgate.
In June 2022, children had opportunities to return to new skills and practise them. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care: here, the nursery day brought these together through conversation, physical exploration and everyday independence. Activities followed a planned progression, with later learning building on skills children had already developed. Repetition gave children opportunities to become more familiar with what they could do before moving on. Adult conversation was part of this teaching. Practitioners described their actions as they carried them out, connecting words with the activity children were watching or joining. With younger children, adults paid attention to what they were trying to communicate and let them direct the exchange. This made conversation responsive to children's interests, rather than simply a sequence of adult questions.
Babies and toddlers explored through sensory activities. Older children explained their thinking, while adults gave them time to respond. Outdoors, climbing and balancing equipment added physical challenge alongside building dens. These experiences put movement, problem solving and cooperation into the same day.
Children also practised listening and concentrating during group activities in June 2022, helping them prepare for learning at school. Language teaching had a specific weakness: adults did not consistently demonstrate accurate vocabulary and sentence construction. That matters for children learning how to express increasingly complex ideas.
At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and additional learning support beneficial, including resources bought for individual needs and one-to-one help arranged with professionals. At that visit, leaders regularly reviewed safeguarding arrangements through audits, and staff received recurring training. Practitioners understood that concerns needed to reach the appropriate people promptly, including concerns about colleagues or leaders. Children also had a part in everyday safety: reminders to tuck chairs back under tables connected their own actions with other people's safety. These were practical routines alongside the adults' responsibilities.
During June 2022, staff knew the skills their key children were working towards and shared ways parents could extend learning at home. For multilingual children, adults worked with families to understand their home languages, used interpreters and introduced relevant words, books and resources. This gave home language a place in nursery life. The June 2022 account also described how children had been supported after returning from pandemic disruption. Staff assessed their starting points and used those assessments to decide which learning needed attention, including communication and emotional development. Children were encouraged to discuss their feelings and given time to regain familiar routines. The practical value was an approach that responded to how children were managing the return, with learning priorities shaped by their needs.
Everyday routines also offered chances to practise independence: children helped themselves to food and poured drinks, with support suited to their abilities. At that time, the nursery employed 11 childcare staff; seven held early years qualifications at level 3 or above, and two had early years degrees.
