Waterloo House Day Nursery

At a Glance

Sensory exploration for babies and shared storytelling for older children give Waterloo House Day Nursery a recognisable character in its February 2023 account of daily life. At its 16 February 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The central learning challenge was giving children more stretching interactions and longer spells of uninterrupted play.

Based in Halifax, the nursery has capacity for 65 children, with an accepted age range from birth to eight years. Its inspection-era experiences below describe February 2023 practice.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2023, babies explored sensory toys, while older children practised cooperation by adding construction pieces to a shared tower. Children encouraged one another and learnt to wait for a turn. These were everyday opportunities to combine play with social skills.

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play supports language, early mathematics and growing independence. In February 2023, The Gingerbread Man gave children repeated story lines to join in with; songs naming body parts introduced vocabulary alongside movement. Shape play, number writing and counting brought mathematical ideas into activities.

Children also practised practical independence that month, getting their outdoor clothing on, preparing the lunch table and helping themselves to food. Craft activities added another way to explore. However, adult interactions did not reliably take learning beyond what children could already do, and changes of activity broke children's concentration. Enjoyable activities needed more depth and continuity.

Care and Support

At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received good support through an experienced coordinator working with families, colleagues and other professionals.

In February 2023, key-person relationships helped children settle, and staff gathered information from parents about children's preferences and needs when they joined. A book helped younger children recognise emotions. Staff also drew on children's home-language vocabulary when supporting those learning English.

Communication that month combined conversations, messages and an online app, giving parents ways to follow development and continue learning at home. Managers reviewed communication arrangements, observed staff practice and identified training needs; supervision meetings gave practitioners space to discuss children and their own wellbeing. Child-protection training, safety checks and ongoing staff-suitability checks formed part of safeguarding practice.

Practical Information

The address is 3 West Parade, Halifax, HX1 2TE. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with Bank Holidays excluded.

In February 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. That is a dated description of its funding offer.

Things to Consider

  • Depth of learning. In February 2023, staff did not consistently extend children's existing skills. During a visit, ask how practitioners now adapt activities when a child needs more challenge.
  • Time to concentrate. Changes in the February 2023 routine interrupted play. Ask how the day now protects sustained, child-chosen activity.
  • Attendance choices. The opening window spans 8am to 6pm. Which booking patterns and funding arrangements would fit your child's intended attendance?

The Verdict

Waterloo House suits families seeking a Halifax setting with an inspection-era emphasis on stories, practical independence and communication with parents. The February 2023 Good judgement provides a positive assessment, balanced by clear priorities around challenge and concentration. Those priorities deserve attention alongside the care arrangements when choosing it.
