Separate sleep rooms for babies, a Sensory Room in St John's Court and a garden with a custom climbing frame give Camelot Day Nursery a clear physical character. Its Moulsham Street premises divide the youngest children's accommodation from the open-plan spaces used by toddlers and preschool children. For parents, the useful distinction is how each part supports a different stage of childhood.
Camelot accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 156 places in total. At its 26 January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good and found safeguarding effective, while identifying a need for more consistent learning challenge and stronger conversations to develop younger children's vocabulary. That judgement is dated; later regulatory action also matters to the picture of care here.
The nursery operates throughout the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. Its combination of baby facilities, outdoor equipment and organised parent involvement gives families several concrete reasons to consider it.
Babies use the accommodation at 79-81 Moulsham Street, where separate sleep rooms sit alongside soft play. Keeping sleep accommodation separate gives resting babies a space distinct from active play. The provision for toddlers and preschool children occupies St John's Court, a courtyard development with open-plan interiors and a Sensory Room.
The outdoor space adds a different kind of movement. Rubber wet pour surfacing accompanies a purpose-built climbing frame and slide, while children can grow vegetables and flowers. Climbing, gardening and indoor sensory experiences offer different ways to explore: large movements outside, changes in growing plants and hands-on discovery indoors.
The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In parent language, this means that play and everyday experiences contribute to learning, rather than education being confined to a formal lesson. Camelot's growing area and accessible outdoor equipment give that learning a practical setting.
In January 2023, children investigated coloured paint mixtures and explored water with foam, sea creatures and differently sized cups. These were hands-on experiences with materials, colour and imaginative play. Younger children handled sand tools, while older children used tweezers to retrieve small objects from sand: different activities for practising controlled hand movements.
The same January 2023 picture included books about recycling, a puppet used to discuss feelings, animal-inspired movements and yoga poses. There was variety, but challenge was uneven. Staff sometimes missed chances to extend an activity or encourage younger and less-confident children to practise unfamiliar words. For families, the important question is how an engaging activity becomes a worthwhile next step in learning.
Summer fetes bring families and friends together for stalls and entertainment, with parents encouraged to help. The Annual Outing involves a coach trip for children and families to an Essex venue or farm. These are opportunities for families to participate in nursery life beyond their child's usual attendance.
Stay and Play sessions also invite parents, carers and relatives to join activities during the year. Their value is practical: adults can share an experience with their child and see the kinds of activities that interest them.
Parents Evenings provide individual appointments with a child's key person, alongside a learning journal containing artwork, photographs and observations. That combination gives parents both a conversation and concrete examples of their child's experiences. It is more useful than a general update alone.
The Parent’s forum meets three times a year, once each term, to discuss developments, fundraising and nursery matters. Parent Representatives provide another route for feedback, including responses to proposed policy changes. These arrangements give families a role in discussions about the setting as well as their own child.
The management role includes training in SENCO work, behaviour management, first aid and safeguarding. This identifies relevant training within the leadership structure; it does not, by itself, establish how an individual child's additional needs will be supported.
Ofsted's compliance outcome dated 9 August 2024 followed a concern received on 23 May 2023 about an allegation involving staff behaviour management and notification of a further allegation on 18 July 2024. It recorded that some requirements were unmet and action had been taken to put matters right. The response included monitoring behaviour-management practice and revising staff safeguarding support, including online safety. This is a dated outcome, rather than evidence of present-day arrangements.
Food is prepared at the nursery, using a nine-day menu rotation that takes individual children's needs into account. The St John's Court kitchen includes stainless steel fittings and an automatic food lift to help distribute meals.
Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year, except for bank holidays and Christmas. The closing periods matter for families planning care around work: the year-round calendar still has breaks to accommodate.
In January 2023, funded early education was provided for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated description of participation, rather than a promise about a family's present entitlement or attendance arrangement. A current written quotation is the basis for assessing private childcare costs.
The nursery's address is 79-81 Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, CM2 0JD, with toddler and preschool accommodation at neighbouring St John's Court. This split is a useful practical detail because the building used depends on the child's stage.
A car park can be used for collections and drop-offs, and there is a buggy park. Enquiries can be made by telephone, email or the contact form, and show rounds can be booked through the same contact route.
Camelot suits families seeking year-round childcare with separate baby accommodation, open-plan spaces for older children and opportunities to join nursery events. Sleep rooms, the Sensory Room and gardening give its physical provision substance; key-person appointments and parent forums add structured ways to stay involved.
The balance requires care. The 26 January 2023 inspection identified teaching priorities, and the August 2024 compliance outcome following repeated allegations warrants a direct discussion about current practice. Families should weigh the facilities and parent involvement alongside that conversation about how care and learning are managed today.
