Berkhampstead Day Nursery, Pittville Circus

At a Glance

A dedicated outdoor space for under-twos, weekly visits from French and music specialists, and access to a school’s Early Years gym give Berkhampstead Day Nursery, Pittville Circus a clear character. Babies have space of their own; older children have opportunities to use facilities beyond their classrooms. The nursery adjoins Berkhampstead School on Pittville Circus Road in Cheltenham.

At its 27 June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and judged safeguarding effective. That assessment concerned the provision for children under two at the time, so it should be read alongside the broader current age range: three months to five years. There is capacity for 26 children in total, a whole-setting figure rather than a classroom size.

Year-round attendance can combine morning, afternoon or full-day sessions. The strongest practical distinction is the combination of nursery spaces and school facilities, with a nature garden, library and sensory room adding different settings for play.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Five classrooms serve different age groups, alongside a dining room, sensory room and library. This gives the nursery more than a single playroom setting: children have spaces for books, meals and sensory experiences as well as their everyday classroom activities.

The outdoor arrangement deserves attention for families choosing baby care. Under-twos have a dedicated area, while the wider grounds include an Early Years playground and nature garden. That separation gives the youngest children their own outdoor setting within a nursery that also caters for children approaching Reception.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for children’s learning, development and care. In parent terms, learning runs through play and everyday experiences, rather than being confined to formal lessons. Berkhampstead adds weekly visits from the school’s specialist teachers for French and music, bringing those subjects into the nursery week.

Access to the school’s cookery room, Early Years gym and all-surface games area broadens the settings children can use. These are concrete additions to the classroom offer. They also make the school connection relevant to a child’s nursery day, rather than simply a shared name or neighbouring building.

In June 2023, activities followed children’s interests and the skills they were developing. Children practising walking used low furniture to steady themselves, received adult help with steps and tried indoor climbing equipment. Movement was practised through several different opportunities, rather than a single exercise.

Communication also ran through ordinary activities in June 2023. Adults talked alongside play, shared an animal book with flaps and encouraged children to name what they saw. These small exchanges gave young children reasons to listen and respond.

Outdoor and Community Life

The nature garden and Early Years playground make outdoor play part of the nursery’s physical offer. Families can weigh that alongside the school facilities: the attraction is access to several different environments, each offering a change from classroom activity.

In June 2023, children also took local walks and visited a care home. Those outings brought contact with people and places beyond the nursery. The care-home connection adds a social dimension to the outdoor offer, although these activities belong to that dated account of nursery life.

Care and Support

In June 2023, the key-person arrangement centred on adults knowing individual children’s routines. Staff recognised when their key children needed milk or sleep, offered physical comfort and worked with parents during settling. For babies, that attention to familiar care patterns matters as much as the activity programme.

At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children needing additional help received effective support through early identification, work with parents and outside agencies, and activities adapted to individual needs. One example involved adults leaving a pause during a car game so a child could contribute a sound or word. Support was built into play, rather than treated as a separate task.

There were two clear weaknesses in June 2023. Nose care was inconsistent, and adults did not reliably explain hygiene or encourage children to try wiping their own noses. Mealtime organisation also left some children waiting without understanding the routine, which reduced their engagement with eating.

These findings concern ordinary moments that occupy a substantial part of a young child’s day. They make personal care and the organisation of lunch useful subjects for a visit, alongside the more eye-catching facilities.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Berkhampstead School, Pittville Circus Road, Cheltenham, GL52 2QA. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas.

Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm; afternoons run from 1pm to 6pm. A full day runs from 8am to 6pm. The shorter patterns give families a choice beyond all-day attendance, and the morning session extends into the early afternoon.

Changes or cancellations require eight weeks’ notice in writing. The same notice applies when new starters postpone their start or reduce their booking. That is a significant planning commitment for families whose work arrangements may change.

Funding and Paid Extras

Eligible families can use the 15 or 30 hours of Early Years Funding, stretched over 51 weeks. This spreads support through the year rather than concentrating it within school terms. Additional unfunded hours are charged separately.

For funded attendance, meals and snacks are separately charged through optional Agreed Additional Services. Non-food consumables are also separately charged within that optional arrangement: the fee terms identify nappy sacks, special waste bags and additional craft supplies. The distinction matters when comparing funded hours with the total childcare bill.

Specialist activities also sit within the optional additional-services structure. Which activities a child accesses depends on the setting and day attended, so weekly French and music visits should be considered alongside the actual booking pattern. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation; the fees and funding page explains the charging structure.

Moving on to School

The nursery describes many children moving on to the adjoining Berkhampstead School. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a school place: families still follow the school’s own admissions process. The shared facilities are a benefit during nursery attendance, separate from any later admission decision.

Things to Consider

  • Personal care and lunch routines. The June 2023 findings identified inconsistent hygiene teaching and confusing waits at meals. During a visit, ask how staff now help children manage nose care and understand mealtime routines.
  • Your child’s weekly pattern. French and music specialists visit weekly, while additional activities depend on the day attended. Ask how your proposed mornings or afternoons align with those sessions and the optional services you choose.
  • School connection. Children use Berkhampstead School facilities and many later transfer there, but nursery attendance guarantees no school place. Treat the school application as a separate decision.
  • Changing a booking. Eight weeks’ written notice applies to alterations, cancellations and certain changes before starting. Build that lead time into plans for changing work hours.

The Verdict

Berkhampstead suits families seeking morning or afternoon care as well as full days, with school facilities and weekly French and music visits adding substance to the offer. The dedicated under-two outdoor area is a useful detail for baby families; the gym, cookery room and nature garden give the broader age range several settings for activity.

The Good judgement provides a dated quality assessment, with practical cautions about hygiene and lunch organisation. Optional charges and the notice period also deserve weight in the decision. The appeal is a nursery day enriched by the adjoining school, with attendance choices that extend beyond a full-day booking.
