St John's Pre-School Macclesfield

At a Glance

Pea pods, orange pips and binoculars gave learning a practical shape at St John's Pre-School Macclesfield in July 2023. Children counted what they grew, explored fruit and looked for wildlife. Everyday objects became reasons to talk, investigate and practise new skills.

Ofsted rated the pre-school Good on 20 July 2023. It has capacity for 24 children and occupies a primary-school site on Ivy Road, Macclesfield, SK11 8QN. Children attending in July 2023 were aged two to four.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2023, children chose their play and staff built activities around their interests. Squeezing oranges prompted discussion of texture and shape, while recalling smoothie-making gave children practice explaining an experience. The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for learning, development and care: here, these were expressed through play, conversation and practical tasks.

Outdoor activity had substance too. In July 2023, bicycles, tyres and space for balancing supported physical play. Growing mint, fruit and vegetables connected children with how plants develop. Binoculars and wildlife checklists added a purpose to making marks, rather than treating pencil practice as an isolated exercise.

Learning needed more consistent progression. In July 2023, staff sometimes planned the next challenge too late, leaving children repeating skills they had already mastered. The improvement action was to organise learning more deliberately around each child's next steps.

Care and Support

At the July 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities receiving timely support and making good progress. Staff recognised additional needs and worked with a link health visitor to arrange referrals.

In July 2023, communication with families included listening to their views about managing allergies at mealtimes. Staff encouraged turn-taking and persistence, including helping children keep trying when opening a yoghurt pot proved difficult. These small interactions supported independence alongside social skills.

Practical Information

In July 2023, attendance ran Monday to Friday in term time, with sessions from 8.45am to 11.45am and 12.30pm to 3.30pm. A lunch club connected the two sessions. Funded early education was offered for children aged two, three and four.

The school-site setting also informed preparation for the next stage. In July 2023, feedback from the local school led staff to adapt snack time so children practised choosing, collecting and carrying their food. Attending the pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place.

Things to Consider

  • The next learning challenge. July 2023 brought an action to strengthen the sequence of learning. Ask how staff now recognise mastery and plan the next step.
  • Term-time routines. The July 2023 pattern combined two sessions with a lunch club. Does today's attendance arrangement fit your working week and holiday needs?
  • Allergy management. Families' views helped shape mealtime arrangements in July 2023. Allergy-affected families should confirm current practice during a visit.

The Verdict

For families looking for morning or afternoon attendance, the July 2023 picture offers useful reasons to look closely: practical learning, purposeful outdoor activity and preparation for everyday school routines. The planning action matters too. This is a pre-school to assess through the quality of children's next challenges as well as their enjoyment of familiar activities.
