Kids Planet Great Boughton

At a Glance

Room to move is the defining practical strength at Kids Planet Great Boughton: a purpose-built nursery with spacious rooms and outdoor areas, taking children from three months to five years. It has capacity for 170 children. That is whole-nursery capacity, rather than the number sharing any child's room, an important distinction for families choosing care for a baby.

At its November 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that children were progressing well. Physical activity gave the learning its character: babies practised standing, while older children climbed and played cooperatively outside. The strengths came with specific improvements required in staff coaching, hygiene practice and the planning of learning activities.

Morning, afternoon and full-day bookings sit alongside a shorter daytime option, with term-time and year-round funding arrangements. The breadth matters for families whose working week does not require the same length of care each day.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning and care: here, play, conversation, movement and practical tasks provide ways to develop those skills. It is the common framework for early education, rather than a special programme exclusive to this nursery.

In November 2024, low furniture and mirrors gave babies reasons to pull themselves upright during play. Foam containing toy animals offered another kind of exploration, combining grasping with sensory experiences. These were concrete activities suited to early development, rather than learning confined to an adult-led group.

Older children worked dough with their hands and used drawing and painting materials to express their ideas. Books also featured indoors and outside, with children bringing stories to adults to share. The combination gave children opportunities to practise both the movements needed for making marks and the language needed to explain their thinking.

Planning was less consistent. In November 2024, staff understood individual children's interests and next steps, but planned activities sometimes followed general nursery priorities too closely. The practical issue for parents is whether an activity is helping their own child practise something useful, rather than simply keeping a group occupied.

Outdoor and Community Life

Outdoor space is part of the current setting's physical offer. The group-wide outdoor approach used here includes investigating wildlife, growing vegetables and active play, making the outdoor areas places for learning as well as exercise.

In November 2024, children used steps and wheelbarrows for physical play. A long tube became a shared garden game as older children carried it together and listened to one another through it. Movement and cooperation met in the same activity. These examples give the outdoor provision more substance than a general promise of fresh air.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In November 2024, adults responded calmly to children's behaviour, offered comfort when emotions became difficult and helped children practise taking turns. Children also tackled everyday tasks themselves, including serving food and putting on coats. Independence was built through ordinary routines, with reassurance alongside it.

At the November 2024 inspection, Ofsted found strong communication with parents and activities tailored to children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. For families needing additional support, the useful detail is that individual needs shaped specific activities, rather than a general statement about inclusion.

Famly, the parent app, supplies updates during the day as part of the group-wide offer at Great Boughton. This gives parents another way to follow nursery life between conversations with staff. It complements the relationships described in November 2024, although those observations belong to that period.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Fresh meals and snacks are provided, with dietary requirements accommodated. Food is included in private fees, while meals on days using early years funding attract a separate charge.

Consistency in everyday care deserves attention. In November 2024, coaching had strengthened the practice of staff who had received it, but it had yet to reach everyone; some hygiene procedures were consequently applied unevenly. The improvement required was wider, sustained coaching so that policies translated into consistent daily practice.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery is on Vaughans Lane, Great Boughton, Chester, CH3 5XF. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, across 52 weeks of the year, with bank holiday and Christmas closures.

Nursery booking patterns include Full Day and Full Time, both running from 7.30am to 6.30pm; Morning from 7.30am to 1pm; Afternoon from 1pm to 6.30pm; and Short Day from 9am to 3pm. Early Bird runs from 7am to 7.30am, and ad hoc hourly care is another charging option. These session times extend beyond the stated opening window, so the timing question belongs in the decision points below.

An Out of School Club provides care outside school hours, and a Holiday Club offers care during school holidays, for children aged four to eleven. Before School runs from 8am to 9am and After School from 3pm to 6pm. Holiday Club patterns are Full Day, 7.30am to 6pm; Morning, 8am to 1pm; and Afternoon, 3pm to 6pm. Families with older siblings therefore have a further attendance option at the same setting.

Enquiries can be made directly by telephone or email. A tour can also be booked.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare is offered alongside private hours. The nursery's funding arrangements cover 15 or 30 hours term-time, or the stated stretched patterns of 11 or 22 hours across the year, depending on the contract. The choice changes how funded hours fit into a family's attendance pattern; it does not make additional private hours free.

Private fees include formula, nappies, sun cream and wipes, alongside sports activities and the parent app. On days when early years funding is applied, meals, consumables and activities are charged separately, with the charge category determined by the number of funded hours applied that day. The distinction between private fees and funded attendance matters more than the all-inclusive description alone. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Session boundaries. The opening window ends at 6pm, while nursery Full Day and Afternoon bookings end at 6.30pm; Early Bird also begins before the stated opening time. Confirm which hours apply to your proposed booking before arranging work or collection.
  • Consistency of care. November 2024 brought improvement requirements around coaching and uneven hygiene practice. During a tour, ask how staff coaching now supports consistent routines throughout the nursery.
  • Individual learning. In November 2024, activity planning needed to connect more closely with children's next steps. Ask for an example of how an activity is adapted for your child's interests and development.
  • Funding and extras. Meals, consumables and activities carry separate charges on funded-attendance days. Request a written quotation separating these categories from private hours so that the total matches your intended pattern.

The Verdict

Kids Planet Great Boughton suits families seeking morning or afternoon sessions as well as full-day or shorter daytime care, with an additional option for school-age siblings. Its spacious premises and outdoor areas give active play room to develop, while the November 2024 picture included practical independence, shared stories and cooperative games.

The decision should also take account of the specific weaknesses in coaching, hygiene consistency and activity planning identified that November. A tour centred on those points, together with clear session boundaries and a quotation distinguishing funded extras from private fees, will make the choice more concrete.
