An outdoor kitchen, bug investigations and cooking gave this Eccleston nursery a practical flavour in August 2022. Children explored real materials and used everyday experiences as starting points for play. That is the strongest thread in the account of Thrive Grosvenor House on Rake Lane, Chester.
At its 2 August 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The current age range is 0 to 60 months, with 97 places in total; that is whole-nursery capacity, rather than the size of an individual group.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care. In parent language, this brings learning and everyday care together: conversation, movement and play sit alongside early experiences of numbers and reading.
In August 2022, children used colour charts to search outdoors and examined insects through magnifying glasses, using identification posters to help them. Younger children mixed water and mud in the outdoor kitchen and carried lists while searching for recipe ingredients. These were concrete ways to bring observation and early reading into imaginative play.
Cooking also featured that August. Children followed illustrated recipes to prepare smoothies, while another activity involved freeing toy dinosaurs from ice as staff introduced words about the changes taking place. The activities connected language with something children could see and handle.
In August 2022, forest school sessions brought learning outdoors, and visits to a local river included water-safety learning. Physical play included balancing on tyres and climbing ladders and frames. Preparing fruit, transferring water and planting vegetables added smaller hand movements alongside those larger challenges.
In August 2022, babies sought cuddles from staff when tired. Younger children explored facial expressions using mirrors, while older children had a daily calming session involving music and breathing. Emotional awareness had a place alongside active play.
Safeguarding was judged effective in August 2022, with staff recognising warning signs and knowing how to respond to concerns. Later events also matter when weighing that dated judgement.
Ofsted’s 3 June 2024 outcome recorded unmet requirements that the provider had taken action to correct: a safeguarding lead had been identified, staffing arrangements reviewed for children’s safety, and first-aid training and incident-notification knowledge updated. Staff deployment and safety arose again in the autumn. Following a regulatory visit on 31 October 2024, a welfare requirements notice required first-aid cover on outings, effective supervision throughout daily routines, and staff understanding and use of risk assessments. These concerned how children were supervised and protected during ordinary routines and trips, rather than teaching quality alone.
At the follow-up visit on 27 November 2024, training had been arranged for staff who might drive the minibus, the team had explored safe deployment, and staff had signed to confirm their understanding of revised risk assessments. The safeguarding and welfare actions were recorded as met. The repeated issues and that subsequent outcome both belong in the decision.
Communication with families in August 2022 included detailed accounts of children’s experiences and ideas for continuing learning at home. The book of the month paired a shared reading choice with activities for families, giving parents a concrete connection with nursery learning.
There was also a teaching concern in August 2022: staff feedback and development needed greater precision, because activities did not consistently produce the intended learning. That matters alongside the appealing examples of play.

In August 2022, funded early education was provided for children aged two, three and four. That describes the offer at the time of the inspection.
Thrive Grosvenor House suits families seeking childcare in Eccleston across the year. Its August 2022 experiences offer specific reasons for interest: practical cooking, outdoor investigation and activities for recognising emotions. The teaching-consistency concern deserves equal attention when weighing those strengths against your child’s needs.
Ofsted rated it Good overall on 2 August 2022. Staff development and feedback were identified as an area to strengthen so teaching became more consistent.
