A purpose-built log cabin, a school field and space for climbing give Caterpillars Pre-School Birch a recognisable character. Its home in the grounds of Birch Church of England Primary School puts outdoor movement and the move towards school alongside the pre-school day. This is a setting for preschool children rather than babies, with capacity for 16 children aged 30 to 60 months.
Ofsted rated the setting Outstanding on 28 June 2022. The detail behind that judgement is more useful than the label alone: children experimented with soil and water, handled tools, developed stories through play and practised managing their own clothes. Those observations belong to June 2022, but they give a concrete picture of the education assessed.
Attendance is term-time, with morning sessions for children aged 2.5 and over and morning or afternoon attendance for children aged 3 and over. The practical distinction matters: the youngest starters have a different attendance offer from older children.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, so play also supports language, early mathematics and independence. It is the educational baseline, rather than an extra programme unique to Birch.
In June 2022, story activities encouraged children to retell events with objects and explore unfamiliar words. Staff introduced vocabulary through conversation about books, giving children opportunities to ask questions and contribute their own ideas. Reading was an activity to participate in, rather than simply listen to.
Early mathematics also ran through play in June 2022. Children counted while doing everyday activities, while written messages between adults and children gave mark making a purpose. A note could invite a reply. That links early writing with communication, rather than treating it only as an exercise in forming letters.
Children also made collective choices in June 2022, expressing preferences by moving into groups or changing position. This gave decision making a physical form that preschool children could join in with. Their opinions became part of the activity.
The cabin has an adjoining outdoor enclosure, with access to the school's playground, field and areas for balancing and climbing. These are different kinds of space: enclosed outdoor play sits alongside room for larger movements. For a child who enjoys being active, the grounds are a substantial part of Birch's appeal.
In June 2022, the mud kitchen supported experiments with coloured water, soil and herbs. Children mixed ingredients and chose containers for their creations, bringing handling, comparison and imaginative play together. The work bench area offered a different challenge, with children practising tool use safely.
A sand pit builders' site was another June 2022 activity, where children combined sand with water and investigated pretend dinosaur remains. Elsewhere, children rolled on a grassy hill and shared stories beneath trees. These examples show how physical exploration and conversation could happen in the same outdoor session.
At the June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, strong progress in learning and successful support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This is a dated judgement about the care and practice assessed then.
In June 2022, the key person and manager used home visits to help children settle and identify learning needs. These visits linked settling with early identification of learning needs. The important practical question is how that relationship is established for a new starter now.
Independence was also visible in June 2022. Children managed handwashing, clothing changes and zips, and repeated pouring activities to improve control. These are useful preparations for school and everyday life: being able to manage a small task gives a child another opportunity to act for themselves.
School preparation took an imaginative form in June 2022. At the creation station, children developed role play involving school clothes, packed bags and a pretend bus journey. This made the next stage something children could explore through play. It did not depend only on adults explaining what school would be like.
Caterpillars Pre-School Birch is at Birch C Of E School, School Hill, Birch, Colchester, CO2 0LZ. From September 2026, its opening hours are 9am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday, during term time. That extension is already in effect.
Morning sessions run from 9am to 12.30pm for children aged 2.5 and over. Children aged 3 and over may attend mornings, afternoons or both within the 9am to 3pm day. This makes age an important part of choosing an attendance pattern, alongside the hours a family needs.
Enquiries can be made through the Birch contact form or by emailing birch@caterpillarspreschool.org. An application form can also be sent to that address. These routes serve families looking to join this branch.
In June 2022, the pre-school provided funded early education for three- and four-year-olds. Families should obtain a current written quotation for their proposed attendance pattern.
The nursery describes a close relationship with Birch Church of England Primary School to support the move into school life. Being on the school site does not guarantee a Reception place: families still apply through the local authority admissions process. Preparation for the change and entitlement to a school place are separate matters.
Birch suits families seeking either a preschool morning or, for children aged 3 and over, afternoon attendance or a combined day during term time. The log cabin and access to the school grounds give it a clear physical identity; the June 2022 examples add substance through practical experiments, storytelling and independence.
The decision turns on fit as much as the Outstanding judgement. The age conditions, Thursday end to the operating week and 3pm finish need to work for the family. For those whose schedules match, outdoor space and preparation for school are compelling reasons to consider Birch.
