Dough, songs and movement give Celtic Rose Center a recognisable character: in January 2025, children joined a daily dough disco, shaping dough to music and exercising the muscles used for writing. Learning had a practical, physical thread.
At its 31 January 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. Two improvements matter for families: quieter spaces for babies to sleep and explore sensory materials, and more consistent teaching of numbers and mathematical language.
The nursery has capacity for 30 children at St James Church Hall in Colchester. Children attending in January 2025 were aged 1 to 4; that age range belongs to the inspection visit.
In January 2025, activities followed children's interests and built on their existing knowledge. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care: here, play included movement, conversation and making things together.
The climbing frame gave younger children opportunities to practise physical skills with staff alongside them. Group movement games involved listening and responding to directions, while construction play required children to discuss where pieces should go. These experiences brought physical development, language and cooperation into the same day.
Daily dough disco added a specific school-preparation activity. Children manipulated dough while familiar music played, practising hand movements relevant to later writing. The mathematical side needed more attention: in January 2025, staff did not consistently extend children's number knowledge or use mathematical vocabulary in activities.
In January 2025, staff spent time learning about children and their families before attendance began. Babies received reassurance and care organised around their individual routines. For settling, that attention to familiar habits is a useful foundation.
Sleep arrangements were less successful. Noise sometimes disturbed babies' rest, and younger children needed more comfortable, quiet spaces for sensory exploration. This is a material consideration for families whose children still need daytime sleep.
Children had individual pegs and storage spaces, giving everyday routines a personal anchor. Staff used considerate language during personal care, and children practised handwashing before snacks. Humus and breadsticks featured at snack time in January 2025.
The address is St James Church Hall, Guildford Road, Colchester, CO1 2RB. With capacity for 30 children overall, the setting's size should be understood separately from the number attending any particular day.
In January 2025, opening hours were 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, during term time. The nursery also provided funded early education for eligible children at that date. The term-time calendar is an important practical consideration for families needing childcare during school holidays.
Celtic Rose Center suits families drawn to practical play, movement and preparation for writing. Its January 2025 inspection gives a positive overall judgement, alongside clear concerns about babies' quiet spaces and early mathematics. Families considering term-time care should weigh those two areas carefully, especially where daytime sleep remains essential.
