Clay insects, talking language resources and vegetables growing in the garden gave Garras Owlets Preschool a recognisable character at its May 2022 inspection. At its May 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated it Outstanding, finding an ambitious curriculum and rapid progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
The preschool has 20 places in total and is based at Garras CP School in Mawgan, near Helston. Children attending in May 2022 were aged two to four; that age range belongs to the inspection period.
In May 2022, learning combined creative work with practical problems. Children made clay bugs, discussed wings and counted out legs, bringing language, number and hand skills into one activity. On a wooden climbing structure, adults used questions to help children work out their own route rather than immediately lifting them.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the May 2022 examples show how those strands met in everyday play: throwing fir cones prompted comparisons of distance, while counting attendance connected numbers with the day's routine.
Translation pens and talk stars added ways to hear other languages in May 2022. Children shared songs and stories in their home languages, and visiting parents introduced food, songs and information about their countries. The garden also supplied practical learning: children discussed why rain mattered to their plants and vegetables.
At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and SEND support highly successful, with parents and the special educational needs coordinator agreeing targets through regular meetings. That gives families a concrete example of support planned jointly rather than simply promised.
In May 2022, home visits and settling visits helped staff understand children's interests before planning activities. Parents received information about development and next steps. Staff also met regularly for supervision and training.
Everyday independence had practical expression that May: children chose outdoor clothing according to the weather, fetched drinks and helped clean tables for meals. Consistent routines supported calm behaviour and sustained concentration.
The address is Garras Cp School, St. Keverne Road, Mawgan, Helston, TR12 6AY.
In May 2022, opening hours were 8.45am to 3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8.45am to midday on Thursday, during term time. The preschool received early years funding for children aged two, three and four at that time.
The school-site setting does not guarantee a Reception place. Families still apply through the local authority admissions process.
For families looking for a preschool with practical, play-based learning, the May 2022 account offers substantial detail: creative number work, multilingual resources and children tackling manageable challenges independently. Its historical term-time rhythm makes it especially relevant to families considering care around the school calendar. The Outstanding judgement is dated May 2022 and should be read in that context.
Ofsted rated it Outstanding at the inspection on 16 May 2022.
