A Georgian house and a large enclosed garden give Little Minnows Nursery a clear character: room to explore outside, with quieter spaces indoors for babies and older children. On Lemon Street in Truro, it cares for children from 3 months to five years. The youngest babies have a separate sleep room; preschool children can move directly between their rooms and the garden.
At its 8 June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Little Minnows Good and judged safeguarding effective. That is a dated assessment, with useful detail beneath it: conversation, imaginative play and outdoor exploration featured strongly, alongside improvement points about early mathematics, babies’ physical development and information for parents.
Attendance includes morning, afternoon and all-day sessions, plus a shorter preschool day. The practical appeal is the choice of patterns alongside an age-based progression through Minnows, Tiddlers, Nippers and Schoolies.
Four named rooms organise the nursery by developmental stage, making the move from very young babies to preschool easy to understand. Their routines are recognisable rather than rigid, so children have a familiar shape to the day while retaining time to pursue their play.
Minnows, for babies aged 3 to 12 months, combines sensory resources with a light room and a separate sleeping space containing wooden cots, while staff aim to follow routines established at home.
Tiddlers, for children aged 12 to 24 months, provides space for crawling and cruising, with exploration of objects, songs, stories and spoken games supporting discovery and early communication.
Nippers, for ages 2 to 3 years, brings together construction, painting, sensory exploration and early mark-making, with outdoor play in wet weather as well as dry and encouragement to make independent choices.
Schoolies, for ages 3 to 5 years, uses two large rooms, one geared towards creative materials and the other with a more domestic feel, both opening directly onto the garden.
These are practical differences. Babies have arrangements shaped around rest and movement, while older children gain more opportunities to choose activities and move between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children’s learning, development and care: here, play and guided discovery give children opportunities to communicate, explore materials and practise independence. Those everyday experiences matter more than a curriculum label alone. The room arrangements make the progression tangible, from sensory exploration to conversation, construction and creative work.
In June 2023, staff developed children’s conversations by adding unfamiliar vocabulary and allowing time for their ideas. Older children acted out teaching roles and read to their friends. A dough activity also grew from making impressions with pine cones into pretend baking, with children preparing trays themselves. The value was in extending an idea rather than moving everyone immediately to the next task.
The same June 2023 assessment identified missed opportunities to bring counting, shape, measurement and numbers into activities. That is a useful distinction for parents: engaging play was evident, but mathematical learning needed more deliberate attention within it.
The enclosed garden supports both independent exploration and activities led by adults. Schoolies’ direct access gives preschool children a straightforward connection between their indoor play and outdoor interests, rather than making the garden a wholly separate part of the day.
In June 2023, older children practised balancing on low beams and used a tyre swing suspended from a tree; quieter outdoor spaces also allowed time to pause. Babies visited a local park to explore grass and watch wildlife, while preschool children took part in supervised fire-making and sausage cooking, singing while they waited. These examples show outdoor learning reaching beyond simply having space to run.
For the youngest children, continuity starts with familiar routines. Minnows staff aim to match babies’ home patterns, and its separate sleep room keeps rest apart from the main activity space. That is a concrete consideration for families whose baby still needs daytime sleep.
Daily diaries through the EyLog App keep parents informed about their child’s progress. In June 2023, parents also attended meetings and nursery events, although communication about children’s activities and the reasons behind them was inconsistent. A diary system and a clear explanation of learning serve different purposes; families benefit from both.
A SEND Lead role sits alongside the Schoolies room leadership, and the team includes a practitioner with a degree in Primary Education and Early Childhood Studies. At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children with SEND progressed well with coordinator-supported strategies, and that staff supported children learning English by using words from their home languages.
In June 2023, adults used books and discussion to help children put feelings into words, while older children practised independence by serving their own drinks and tidying after meals. Babies explored differently textured materials, but needed more opportunities to build physical control, including balance and strength.
Meals and snacks are prepared fresh by the nursery’s own chef using locally sourced ingredients. Session prices include both meals and snacks, keeping food within the ordinary session charge.
The address is 51 Lemon Street, Truro, TR1 2PE. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 51 weeks, with closures at Christmas and on bank holidays.
The All Day session runs from 7.30am to 6pm. Morning sessions run from 7.30am to 1pm, and afternoon sessions from 1pm to 6pm; these options cover all nursery ages. The Pre-School session is 9am to 3pm for children aged 3 to 5 years. A family arranging a shorter day therefore has more than one pattern to consider, depending on the child’s age.

Funded childcare is offered to children who meet the government’s criteria. Little Minnows also participates in Tax Free Childcare and accepts vouchers from legacy employer schemes. Eligibility remains a condition of the funded offer.
The session charge includes meals, snacks, resources and outings. Current prices come in the nursery’s written quotation. For families comparing attendance patterns, the important distinction is between the hours they book and the funding that applies to their child, rather than assuming the two are interchangeable.
Little Minnows suits families seeking morning or afternoon care as well as an all-day arrangement, with a 9am to 3pm option for preschool children. Its strongest practical features are the separate baby sleeping space, age-based rooms and preschool access to a substantial enclosed garden.
The Good judgement dates to June 2023. Its improvement points give parents specific matters to explore, especially babies’ movement, mathematics within play and explanations of learning. Those questions sit alongside a clear room progression and a session structure that accommodates different lengths of day.
