Craghead Childcare Centre

At a Glance

In January 2024, bead threading, balancing on wooden blocks and making pizza illustrated Craghead Childcare Centre's practical approach to learning. At its January 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The strongest examples connected children's interests with developing language, coordination and independence.

Based at The Middles, Craghead, Stanley, DH9 6AG, the centre has capacity for 38 children, with an age range of 2 to 60 months. Its weekday opening hours run from 8am to 6pm.

The Nursery Experience

In January 2024, learning followed a deliberate sequence. Younger children worked on confidence, communication and social development, while older children practised becoming more independent before school. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, play and everyday routines supplied concrete opportunities to practise those skills.

Fine movements had a purpose. In January 2024, squeezing wet sponges, manipulating play dough and threading beads helped children work towards controlled pencil use. Repeated songs and familiar picture books gave them opportunities to rehearse vocabulary. Two-year-olds had space for physical play and could observe older children's behaviour.

Staff also adapted activities to children's interests. In January 2024, an interest in pizza prompted cooking that involved instructions and mathematics. Weekly staff discussions considered children's progress and next steps. Dance and movement sessions with an external provider were planned to support physical and social development.

There was a clear weakness alongside these examples: in January 2024, adults sometimes missed opportunities to extend learning during play led by children. More purposeful planning of interactions was the improvement priority.

Care and Support

At the January 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described targeted help for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including external advice, as supporting their progress.

Relationships were evident in ordinary moments. In January 2024, children sought familiar staff for comfort, and adults responded affectionately. Gentle help with disagreements and praise for considerate behaviour supported turn-taking, including waiting to cross the play bridge.

Daily routines encouraged independence too. In January 2024, toddlers used a stool to reach handwashing facilities under supervision, while older children chatted together over lunch. Families valued the daily handovers. These exchanges gave parents a regular account of how their child had settled and spent the day.

Practical Information

The centre opens Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That closure pattern matters when arranging childcare around work.

In January 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for two- and three-year-old children. This is a dated account of participation, rather than a promise of an individual funded place.

Things to Consider

  • Adult involvement in play. Planning interactions was the January 2024 improvement priority. During a visit, look for how staff extend children's ideas and conversation.
  • Funded attendance. Funded early education was offered in January 2024. Which current entitlements and attendance arrangements apply, and how are meals and consumables handled?
  • Christmas cover. The centre closes for one week at Christmas as well as bank holidays. Families needing care across those periods will need another arrangement.

The Verdict

Craghead suits families seeking weekday childcare across the year, with younger children's communication and older children's independence prominent in its January 2024 practice. Practical play and warm relationships make the clearest case for it. The balance is the need for adults to use children's play more consistently as an opportunity to deepen learning.
