Haystacks Nursery

At a Glance

A tree swing, boats travelling along drainpipes and garden block-building give Haystacks Nursery a practical, playful character in its March 2022 account. At its 18 March 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. That is a dated assessment, rather than a description of today's daily practice.

Haystacks Nursery has capacity for 64 children, accepting ages from 3 to 60 months. The nursery is on Durham Way North within Newton Aycliffe's Aycliffe Business Park, DL5 6HP.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: here, the March 2022 examples show learning through play, conversation and physical exploration. Babies handled rice and coloured dough, using their fingers to pick up, squeeze and roll. Older children used tricycles and a tree swing, while younger children experimented with moving boats using water and drainpipes.

In March 2022, garden construction brought counting into physical play. Children estimated the height of block towers and considered whether a jump would be safe. These activities connected mathematical ideas with decisions children could make themselves.

A toddler-led Bear Hunt involved collecting sticks and bags before searching the garden. Holi introduced a celebration from another culture through an explanation and powder-paint play; visits to a local shop involved buying fresh produce. These were concrete ways to connect imaginative play with the world beyond the nursery.

Care and Support

At its March 2022 inspection, Ofsted found accurate tracking of children's development and targeted SEND support organised jointly by practitioners, the special educational needs coordinator and external professionals. That matters for families whose children need support shaped around a particular developmental need.

In March 2022, children practised independence by changing footwear and putting on outdoor clothing. Staff helped them handle feelings, share and take turns, using gentle reminders when necessary. Regular training, coaching and supervision supported practitioners' work.

Parents received progress updates in March 2022, but staff needed to offer more ideas for extending learning at home. Language support also needed refinement: staff introduced vocabulary during play, yet sometimes used inaccurate pronunciation. Both points matter because everyday exchanges help children practise and extend their language.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year. The business-park address gives families a concrete location to weigh alongside that weekday opening window.

Things to Consider

  • Learning at home. The March 2022 improvement action concerned giving parents practical ideas to extend learning. During a visit, ask how progress updates now translate into activities families can use at home.
  • Language modelling. Correct pronunciation was also a March 2022 improvement action. Ask how practitioners support clear speech during everyday play.
  • Attendance arrangements. The weekday opening window runs from 7.30am to 6pm. Which booking patterns and charge arrangements would apply to your child's attendance?

The Verdict

Haystacks suits families seeking year-round weekday care who value hands-on play and outdoor exploration. Its March 2022 examples make that appeal tangible: construction, water play and imaginative garden adventures. The decision should also take account of the two development points, especially how staff connect nursery learning with home and model language.
