Little Waves Day Nursery

At a Glance

Wetsuits, wellingtons and a balancing beam give Little Waves Day Nursery a practical character: in September 2024, children practised dressing for outdoor play and proudly demonstrated their balancing skills. Everyday tasks became opportunities to do things for themselves.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 26 September 2024. Based in Seaham, it has capacity for 48 children aged 24 to 48 months. This is provision for toddlers and preschool children, rather than babies.

The Nursery Experience

In September 2024, learning followed children's interests as well as their next developmental steps. An interest in magazines, for example, prompted staff to add them to role play. The early years foundation stage sets the framework for learning, development and care; here, play, conversation and practical tasks illustrated how those elements could come together.

Independence had concrete expression. Children learnt to manage their outdoor clothing, with older children taking pride in dressing themselves. The balancing beam added a physical challenge, while musical instruments gave staff and children a shared activity involving sounds and play.

Group experiences also mattered. In September 2024, children shared construction bricks, took turns and listened to one another. Staff helped them understand routines and boundaries through their own behaviour. These were useful rehearsals for participating in a group at school.

Questioning needed greater consistency, however. Some exchanges established children's understanding and corrected mistakes, but others stopped short of encouraging harder thinking or problem-solving.

Care and Support

At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and strong support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including collaboration with parents and external agencies. Support had practical mechanisms: agreed targets, meetings, help with referrals and pictures explaining what would happen next.

In September 2024, families were helped to use those visual prompts at home too. Staff and parents coordinated learning between home and nursery, and feedback covered children's development. This gave families concrete ways to continue the same approach beyond the nursery day.

Staff worked closely together, and management adapted the organisation of learning to make activities easier for children to access. Training was available, but its connection to better outcomes for children needed to be clearer.

Practical Information

The address is 1a Emily Street East, Seaham, County Durham, SR7 7SH. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout the year, with bank holidays excluded.

In September 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. That is a dated participation fact rather than a promise of a particular funded attendance arrangement.

Things to Consider

  • Stretching children's thinking. September 2024 questioning sometimes lacked sufficient challenge. Ask how staff now extend a child's ideas and encourage problem-solving during play.
  • Training with a purpose. September 2024 staff development needed a clearer connection to children's outcomes. Ask for an example of training that has changed everyday practice.
  • Matching care to your week. The nursery opens throughout the year and closes on bank holidays. At a visit, ask which booking pattern and funded-hours arrangement would fit your working week.

The Verdict

Little Waves suits families seeking provision for toddlers and preschool children, with practical independence and collaborative support prominent in its September 2024 practice. The Good judgement gives a positive inspection position, balanced by specific work needed on questioning and staff development. Its year-round opening pattern is relevant to parents organising care beyond school terms.
