Grangehurst Playgroup

Grangehurst Playgroup is a sessional playgroup on Anderton Road in Aldermans Green, Coventry, run from within its host school. It has been going since 1991 and holds 60 places. Ofsted rated it Good in June 2025, noting a warm welcome, a clear school-readiness curriculum and effective safeguarding.

What gives the setting its character is its closeness to the school it sits inside: children use the school's own spaces and know its staff long before they start Reception.

The curriculum is built around getting children ready for school, and it leans hardest on the two things that matter most at this age: talking and getting along with others. Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, the national framework that sets out early development across seven areas of learning and expects children to reach them through play. On top of that floor, the playgroup puts real weight on communication. Staff train in Makaton and in speech and language support, model and repeat key words for children with speech delays or more than one home language, and use picture clues and visual timetables so every child can follow what is happening.

Feelings get the same attention: staff help children name emotions using books and picture cards, talking through what a word like disappointed means during stories. Independence is built into the routine, with children self-registering on arrival and putting their coats, bags and belongings away themselves. Physical play is plentiful, from parachute group games to a junk-modelling and craft area where children cut, glue and make marks to build the small-muscle control that later handwriting needs. Outdoors, they plant seeds and look after them as they grow.

The clearest strength is the bond with the host school. The playgroup uses various parts of the school through the day, so children already know the building and the adults in it, and prospective Reception teachers come in to run storytelling sessions beforehand. That familiarity eases the transition to school, though a Reception place is still applied for separately through Coventry's admissions process and is not secured by attending.

For children with special educational needs or disabilities, staff use individual support plans and work closely with families and outside professionals so each child is included across the session. Partnerships with parents run deep, with progress shared through daily conversations, stay-and-play sessions, learning journals and reports. At the June 2025 inspection, safeguarding arrangements were effective, with an open culture that keeps children's interests first.

Grangehurst Playgroup is based at Anderton Road, Aldermans Green, Coventry CV6 6JN, and takes children of preschool age, roughly two to four. It runs Monday to Friday in term time, with a morning session from 9am to midday and an afternoon session from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds is offered, a real help where childcare costs weigh on family budgets. Current session prices depend on the hours booked and are given in the playgroup's own written quotation.

• Sessional and term-time only. The playgroup runs two fixed sessions a day in term time, not all-day or holiday care, so a family needing a full working day or holiday cover will have to combine it with something else.
• A school-linked setting. Because it sits within its host school, ask how the sessions fit around the school day, and remember a Reception place there still goes through the local authority rather than following on automatically.
• Communication and additional needs. If your child has a speech delay, more than one home language or additional needs, ask how the Makaton, visual supports and individual plans would work for them.

Grangehurst Playgroup suits Coventry families who want a settled, school-ready start for a two-, three- or four-year-old in either a morning or an afternoon session. Its real strengths are a genuine focus on talking and confidence, concrete communication and additional-needs support, and an unusually close bond with the host school that eases the move up to Reception.
