Abbot's Hill Day Nursery & Pre-School

A nursery with 76 acres behind it is a different proposition from a nursery with a garden. Abbot's Hill Day Nursery & Pre-School occupies the Bunkers Lane site of Abbot's Hill School on the southern edge of Hemel Hempstead, takes children from six months to four years, and has 65 places in total. Woodland School, an integral part of the Prep School curriculum, is led by a qualified Forest School practitioner.

Ofsted judged the setting Good at its inspection on 8 September 2016, awarding Good in each of the four areas assessed and recording safeguarding as effective. The nursery describes itself as one of the 20 best nurseries in the East of England in 2026, on the strength of parent reviews.

Provision runs by age group, from Tiny Toes through Footsteps and Stepping Up to Pre-School, which children join once they turn three, and the youngest learn mainly through play. Days are sold as short days and full days across a 50-week year, with a three-day minimum booking.

Rooms and Ages

Four published age groups carry children through the setting: Tiny Toes, Footsteps and Stepping Up for the under-threes, then Pre-School from the term a child turns three. Pre-School carries a published cap, and it is a firm one: classes have a maximum of 20 children. Twenty is a full room by early years standards.

Stepping Up is the only group bookable term-time only, billed termly, which suits families shifting to a school rhythm before Reception.

Learning and Named Experiences

Learning runs on the Early Years Foundation Stage, the statutory framework every early years provider in England works to. In practice that means a day built around the areas of learning, from communication and physical development to literacy and mathematics, with the structure increasing as children grow.

What sits above that floor separates this setting from most day nurseries. Pre-School children have daily sessions in phonics and early mathematics, and each week they take specialist teaching in music, French, PE and swimming in the on-site pool, plus Forest School lessons. Free-flow access between indoor and outdoor learning spaces runs whatever the weather. That is prep-school provision, available because the school sits on the same site.

Outdoor and Community Life

Woodland School gives the outdoor work a name and a qualified lead: children build dens, hunt for minibeasts, study the seasons and take age-appropriate risks. In September 2016 the older children were walking to the forest, collecting sticks and reaching for mathematical language, big and tallest, and talking to staff about the snails and birds they found.

Food is cooked in-house and served to children in their own rooms, on menus that rotate over three weeks and change with the seasons; the youngest eat in the Annex with Reception and Year 1. The nursery publishes a policy of not knowingly using nuts or nut products, and the kitchen caters fully for all dietary requirements, which an allergy-affected family should still go through in person.

Relationships and Communication

Every child has a named key person, giving a family one consistent adult for settling, daily handovers and the account of how a child is getting on.

At the September 2016 inspection that relationship was doing real work: parents valued the close attention their child's key person paid to individual preferences, and a gradual settling-in process was helping children settle quickly and form close attachments to the adults caring for them. Moves between rooms were tailored to the individual child rather than to a calendar.

The same inspection asked for two improvements, both still worth raising: that it evaluate its development plans so the impact of changes on children's learning could be identified, and that it find further ways of including parents in learning at home.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the September 2016 inspection, safeguarding arrangements were effective. Staff had regular child protection training, recruitment was rigorous, all adults working or living on the site were vetted, and entry ran through a fingerprint scanner.

Being on a school site paid a dividend even then: nursery staff could use the school's training, professional expertise and facilities. Individual medical, dietary or additional-needs arrangements belong in the joining conversation.

Sessions and Attendance

Short days run 8.30am to 3.30pm and full days 8.00am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Wraparound extends both ends, with early drop-off from 7.30am and late collection until 6pm, each carrying its own daily charge. The minimum booking is three short days a week, and the nursery runs 50 weeks a year, closing on bank holidays.

Getting There

The address is Bunkers Lane, Hemel Hempstead, HP3 8RP, inside the school's grounds. The school's coach and minibus routes are open from Year 3 upwards, not to nursery families.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded early education is offered: 15 hours a week from the term after a child's third birthday until they leave, capped at three hours a day and up to 38 weeks a year, with some families qualifying for 30 hours from the term after a child turns nine months. For Stepping Up children attending all year the entitlement is stretched across 50 weeks; on the term-time-only option it is delivered across 34 weeks.

The session rate is not the whole bill: meals and snacks are charged separately, as are other consumables, and both wraparound slots are charged by the day. Joining requires two registration forms, a non-refundable administration fee and a deposit once a place is accepted. Siblings of children already at the nursery or the school, and families registering for the school itself, are given priority when places are allocated. Current nursery-specific prices are supplied in the nursery's written quotation.

Moving on to School

The nursery describes itself as a setting that feeds seamlessly into the Prep School, and says children can move seamlessly into the Reception class. Attending does not secure a Reception place. Entry runs through the school's own admissions process, with entry assessments from the autumn term before the September start, when children spend up to two hours with staff using toys, books and one-to-one tasks.

Transition work is concrete: during the autumn term Pre-School families visit Reception to meet the teaching team, the Reception teacher works with nursery staff on the handover, and parents attend an induction meeting at the end of the summer term.

• The published judgement is a decade old. Good across all four areas in September 2016 is a genuine result, but a report of that age describes a team and routine that may have turned over several times since. Current practice is the thing to test on a visit, not the grade.
• The session rate is only part of the cost. Meals and snacks, other consumables and both wraparound slots sit outside it, and funded hours are capped at three hours a day, so the entitlement covers part of a session rather than all of one.
• Three days is the floor. Families wanting one or two days a week are not served here. Where a nursery cannot offer the exact days a family wants, the usual outcome is a part-week place or days that were not first choice, and in competitive areas families register long before a start date and still begin on a partial pattern.
• Parent involvement in learning at home. The 2016 inspection wanted more of it, so families who value that thread should ask what goes home now and how progress is shared.

Two things make this setting unusual, and both come from the school wrapped around it: 76 acres with a qualified Forest School practitioner working in them, and weekly specialist teaching in music, French, PE and swimming that a standalone nursery would struggle to fund. In 2016 children were making good progress from their starting points in a bright, stimulating environment, and the detail published since points the same way.

It suits families who want a year-round full day on a school site, and equally the family that books the minimum three short days a week or takes the term-time-only Stepping Up option, which is a genuinely part-week, part-year proposition. It suits less well those who need one or two days, those who want a single all-in price, and those who want a recent external verdict on quality, because the published one dates from 2016.
